This involves a Corvette, but more importanly the automotive enthusiasm of Bill Kashishian, spanning 60 years. Bill is 80. I dropped by today to see what he was up to. He showed me a new issue of Hot Rod mag. On page 54-55 is a 2 page pic of the John Mazmanian '61 Corvette which was recently auctioned for 250K. Bill said he built the engine when his shop and dyno were in E. LA, but with FI and not the blower. It was one of 5 cars Bill either owned or built that won Winter Nationals, last one in 1964.
He proceeded as always to fill my head full of names, dates, stories, races, and time slips. When the McCullough superchargers came out he had to have one. They were expensive so he put up the money for a dealership and bought quite a few, 1/2 for Chevy and the other half Ford. The Fords sold out a lot quicker than the Chevys.
He was good friends with Doug Thorley, as they were next door to each other. Doug helped him move his shop after Thorley header grew and needed more space.
Bill continues to be very active in auto mechanics with an at home shop in Grants Pass, OR. A tremendous resource. He's serviced my wife's Honda, as well as cars going back into the teens. His pride is a '64 Malibu with 383. Engine has maybe 100 miles. I think the car was built up to pass on to his son.
Towards the end of the session he talked about what he'd do if younger. One was a BB all aluminum engine. The other was putting an engine dyno in his shop. It is easy to know he loved his dyno and those days that ended with the shop sale in 1981.
As JM put it, one of the good guys!
