I'm in a heated argument over the FE engine. I seem to remember that the 390 and larger FEs had a taller block than the shorter-stroke FEs like the 332, 352 and (Edsel) 361. The other guy insists that they all had the same block (or deck) height. But there's something nagging me in the back of my head about taller FE blocks.
I can't find anything definitive on the web or in my old literature, so I'm gonna throw this out to the experts...
Thanks in advance!

Are you confusing the Ford small block with the FE? The 351/400 had a taller deck height than the 302 and smaller... All FE's had the same deck height.
Like your Merc, tho.

Well thare might be a ringer here The 58 Edsel 361 had the short deck heigth. When the 361 was revisited for truck motors (and rebranded as the 360) the compression was much lower due to the higher deck.As far as I know its the only one. Oldmics

I think the only thing in common with the Edsel 361 (E-400) and the 361 industrial engine is the block. The pistons, rods, heads, industrial engines usually had steel cranks, different balancers among other things.

Don't know for sure, but didn't Ford list the truck versions as 360" not 361" ?

The light duty (pickups) were 360's. the med duty trucks were 361's. Same deal with the 390 and 391.

Heck, at my age, I'm confusing everything.
I don't know why I've got the idea of a tall-deck FE in my head. I knew the Ford 351/400 V8s had a taller deck relative to the 302, and I also knew about the Mopar B & RB blocks (350/361/383/400 have lower deck height than the 383*/413/426/440 engines.
I remember seeing at a 390 & 352 sitting side-by-side long ago and thinking that the 390 looked "taller", but there may have been beer involved with this perception...
----------
*In '59 & '60, Chrysler used its own tall deck 383, with bore x stroke of 4.03" X 3.75". This was essentially a small bore version of the RB 413. Dodge & DeSoto used the "low-block" 383 with the 3.38" stroke.
