A friend of mine recently bought a 57 TBird. In looking over the engine, he noticed that the block has a casting number of B7AE. Can anyone ID this? 312 or???? , Service/replacement block, marine/industrial? Thanks for any help.

Here is where to look up information on blocks, heads, etc.

I don't have a listing for B7AE. I would say it is a replacement block, probably 312 since Ford made 292's until 64. No need for replacement blocks when they are still in production.

Ford did not add the E to part numbers and casting numbers until 1959. Look for a date code above the starter. That will help ID the block.

No road draft tube, in fact no provision for one either.

Huh, Mine has no road draft tube provision either but is a B9AE maybe the 9 looks like a 7?

I think you could get B9AE 312 in a mercury if it has ECZ main caps on it. Mine is a 292 though.

As has already been mentioned, a date code off of the block may help here.  The ‘B’ series blocks were cast in the Fifties and as such I’m thinking you have a B9 block with a fuzzy or misinterpreted casting number.  I'll add that all the 'B" blocks I've seen that have had 'AE' in the casting number have been the 1959 blocks.  I’ve a C2AE block here with a 1967 casting date which makes service and/or marine blocks still being cast up to that point but this being a ‘C’ series block has it being cast in the Sixties.
