My books just show colors for the Ford engines and says "Mercury and Edsels were not detailed in the same colors"  Can anyone tell me what color the engine should be in a "56 Merc.?

For 1956 the all gold color would signify that engine as a standard 225 H.P. unit.

Later engines that were 235 H.P. (mid year factory cam upgrade) were also gold with the exception that the dome covers were argent (silver grey) coloring with the Mercury script on the dome cover being done in blue lettering.

I'm not sure if Mercury gold is available, but Oldsmobile used a gold that is very close and it is available.

From the 56 mercs i've owned the standard shift had orangish red valve covers w/black mercury letters and orangish red carb breathers and rated at 215 hp, A/T holley equiped had argent valve covers /blue to bluish green letters and argent carb breathers, and carter equiped were blue valve covers and carb oil bath breathers w/ argent letters on the blue covers. There may be others I'm not aware of. But in 1956 all mercurys came with 312s and ford gold engines, but any engine gold should work.

weren't some of the Lincoln Y's that same gold color?

In 1956 I believe the lincolns were blue with black valve covers and breather.
