Does the ford car tranny setup include a transmission mount or is held by the bell housing?

Depending on which specific car you are asking about there is a rear tranny mount supported by a removeable crossmember.

3 speed tranny w/ Y's

56 had a removable crossmember at the rear of all manual transmissions.

Generally, throughout the 50's, CARS had the rear mount on the trans. Trucks with YBlocks were different, the rear mount was on the bellhousing.

this is a curious question.. all of the truck bells I have seen have "dog ears" for a mounting point on them.. BUT i have a Truck (big 10 spline) 3 speed OD tranny that has an obvious place to bolt it to a cross member just after the main gearbox and before the OD unit on the underside.. Is there one way to mount that is stronger/more reliable than the other??

Well, here is my second question.  What do you think of mounting a car bell housing in a truck and fabbing up a crossmember for the tranny? I am thinking about this instead of modifying the truck bell when isntalling a T5.  Any thoughts?

I believe that's how they did it from the late 60s on. You will need to either add mounts to hold the engine, or make a steady rest for the engine. I think it'll be a lot more work than modifying the bell housing.

I was thinking of fabricating motor mounts to fit the car mounts.  More work, probably.  I always seem to make more work for myself.

You answered your own question, in a way. Going to a trans mount will put added stress on the bellhousing/back of the block maybe enough to rip out the bolts in the block or crack the bellhousing. The solution to this is add side mounts to the engine like the cars.

Seems like a lot of work since there is an adapter ? for a T-5 from Mummert for the truck bellhousing (if I remember correctly.) Or is it a modified bellhousing???

it's a modified bell.. cars have an adaptor and trucks are a modified bell-housing

I would need to modify the bell housing and do a few other things to use the truck housing.  It appears the car bell housing provides a direct fit using Mummert's adapter but I am sure will come with it's own set of issues.  I am just wondering what will be the easiest for me to do myself.

If you can weld cast iron, then modifying the bell housing will be easiest.

If you're willing to pay for the adapter, why not spend $50.00 more for the modified bell housing. The amount of time saved is well worth it in my opinion. Plus, the stock mounts work great.

Wait, I have been under the impression that I would still need the adapter if the bell housing was modified...

This is not the case?  That answers a lot of questions!

The T-5 mounts directly to the modified bell housing. You will need to shorten the pilot of the input shaft by about 3/32" but that is it.

Ahhhhhh...... Thank you.
