hard starting

I have just installed 3x2s holley model 2100s and edlebrock manifold on my 55bird. when it starts first thing it does fine after a warm up all runs great. But, when i get some place and stop for maybe 5 minutes it is like pulling teeth to get it to start . These carbs were rebuilt by a carb man in california. the middle carb only has idle circuits and a choke. Engine idles at about 800 RPM until it warms and then is about 500-700 in gear. I just have great difficulty getting it to restart. When it restarts it runs fine. I am not the best at this but I can do some things with carbs, I am no expert and I am lost. Any help is appreciated and greatly needed.thanks 55Birdman Smile

I have petronix electronic ignition and coil for about 5 years with no problems.

Birdman:

We need a little more information.  Did you have this problem before you installed the carb setup?  When it starts, does it seem flooded, ie black smoke out the exhaust, have to rev it up to "clean it out"?  Does it crank OK, just won't fire?  Let us know.

started ok with 4bbl I had on it. at times it started hard when hot. now seems to be flooded on restarts. black crap out the back when I rev it up. at idle smells like somebody died in the exhaust. lot like unburned fuel(?). push accelerator to floor and it does startwith smoke out the back. exhaust smells all the time even before 3x2s installed. hope this helps. I'm gonna pullthe plugs tomorrow and check that out.

Birdman:

You obviously have a flooding issue in one or more of the carbs.  Possibilities are fuel level too high, fuel pressure too high, loose needle seat, needle not seating, or power valve diaphragm ruptured.  I have heard that those carbs don't like more than 4 psi fuel pressure, some guys solved their flooding problem by installing a fuel pressure regulator.

These carbs were rebuilt by a carb company in Calif. Not saying the carbs are not working properly.Why should they put them together wrong? Saying they are wrong  how and where do I install the  regulator?

I'm not saying the carbs were intentionally put together wrong, but I assume they were put together by a human, and part of our humanity is being imperfect.  We make mistakes.  The slightest piece of contamination could have entered the fuel inlet during handling, such as piece of lint from a rag, a piece of dirt, a piece of rubber from the fuel hoses, etc.  Anything like that can get lodged in the needle seat and prevent the needle from sealing.

Install the pressure regulator between the fuel pump and the fuel block so that all three carbs get regulated fuel.  The Y Block pump probably puts out 5-6 psi.  You might check it before you regulate it.

For the last few hours I have been up to my elbows in dirt working on these carbs. pulled plugs etc. replaced them, dist cap,rotor, (even changed the oil). I checked the middle carb and found a bent needle valve. I took one off a spare carb I had and switched it after cleaning it . I made sure other carbs circuits were closed hooked it all back up and started it up. I drove it around a while and came back to the house and let it sit 15 minutes and restarted it. It fired fairly easily, no smoke,smell or anything else . I have restarted the car at several different time spans and it started much better. I installed the pressure regulator also. I will keep my eye on it for a few days and see what happens . Thanks for all the help. Earl Dagenhart 55Birdman SmileTongue

I know. I wasnt upset about what you said. I was just stating that to my way of thinking .If you are in the business to rebuild carbs or anything else you would be sure to do it right. That is if you want repeat business. I too am human and thats why I put topics on this web . No harm no foul. I am by no stretch of the imagination infallible (?) (i think thats the word).i just get frustrated at people who rebuild these things and I have all this trouble with them .
