The crankshaft will fit right in so no problem there.  But the cam is another story.  If  the 256 engine is a '54 model, then the cam journals may be the larger size which prevents the ’55 and up camshafts from being run without modifying the cam bearings appropriately.  The ’54 engines had cam journal sizes and corresponding cam bores in the block that were approximately 0.125” larger than the ’55 and up engines.  It's easy enough to make new cam bearings for the early block though and use the later camshafts if you have access to a capable machine shop.  The '55 model pickup 256 engines had the smaller cam journals so no problems there in using any of the later cams.
