The thicker bearings make up for what is taken off the crank.  This question came up years ago in a shop talk question in Hot Rod Magazine.  I'm not so clever, the editor of HR confirmed it after conferring with one of the top crankshaft companies of the day.  Why did I remember this?  Who knows.
