morning folks

i've just dismantled a spare pickup tube which was somewhat battered where it exited the pan with a view to bend up a new tube. on removing the three arm disc to expose the screen i was surprised to see an eyelet crimped into the screen with a 3/8 hole directly below the pickup tube. can you guys say why?   why have a screen and then put a hole in it?

word of warning  this pickup tube looked good on the outside, no rust just dimpled on the bend but under the screen it was full of rust and clinker!!

That hole should be up against a metal plate or have a flap/check valve against it.  The intended design is if the screen gets stopped up, then the hole becomes exposed and still allows oil to get to the pump.  It will be unscreened oil at that point but the thought process is any oil is better than none at this point.

thanks Ted

just one more question which i think i will find the answer to in due course. i've bent up a new tube and at its highest point is 1" below the pan gasket surface will there be clearance issues with the rotating bits??

Without actually looking at an assembled short block, I’m going to say yes.  Just double check this as you are putting your engine together.
