I know this sounds funny but on the driver's side of my intake manifold there is a little 7/8 inch metal mushroom...is this some sort of valve or vent?

Thanks to all yet again, I haven't stumped you yet.

I believe that it is an intake vent for the choke stove.

The mushroom shaped piece is in fact a air intake. It is plugged into the tube that runs laterally through the intake manifold in the cross over exhaust chamber. On the right side of the intake manifold is the other end of the tube and it connects to the choke housing chamber. Through internal passages in the carburetor there is a slight vacuum present in the choke housing which allows the flow of warm air to open the choke.

Thanks for the information. You've now solved the metal mushroom problem.

Next question, the forward bolt on my intake manifold is in fact a stud, threaded on both ends. Does anyone know why this was not a bolt? I've seen pictures of other peoples' manifolds and they too have a stud in this postion.

Any ideas?
