I am new to this site and got your address from the guys at the Yuma, Az. Car show. I have a 1955 Crown Vic 2 door hardtop, and many questions. The car came with a 1959 292 c.i. Witch hasn't been installed yet , I assume there will be no problem that engine in the 1955 body. Second : I have two transmisions – the first is a air cooled Ford-A-Matic with tag ( PAK 7003 D2 ) all cast Iron. The other is also a Ford-A- Matic ( I assume ) with no tag but the case has a stamp ( PMB 7976 A ) aluminum bell housing and tail . My friend says it may be water cooled. Witch would be the best for a good reliable ride ??

Thanks Neil ( Vicky 55 )

Starting with the 1955 Y engines and going through 1964, these are typically interchangable without much fanfare.  Particular items to watch out for are the oil pans (front sump versus rear sump) and the water pumps (pilot size for the pulley).  If converting from a rear sump to a front sump oil pan, the oil dipstick will need to be removed from the center of the block to the front of the block.  Bellhousing and motor mount patterns are the same across the board so no problem there.

PMB seems to be a medium case tranny for 1955 292 cid engine and PAK is a small case tranny for 1955 272 cid engine.

if it has an alum, bell would it not be a 61 or 62 cruiseomatic.

If the aluminum bellhousing is cast as part of the case and is not removable it is a 2-speed FOM and not very desirable. The torque converter will have 3 ears to attach to the flex plate.

Undesirable, but fun as all hell...they feel like the car is gonna blow up, and then suddenly you're lugging out while bumping into the speed limit!

Welcome. The guys here are by far the most knowledgeable I've ever come across on any website.
