walking thru the parking lot at my daughter's softball game tonight, I was disgusted to hear the sound of an American icon... a new vette! sure, it had a nice lumpy idle, but then as it drove off, it sounded so pathetic! A "soprano" voice, not a nice bass rumble more fitting of "America's sportscar"! my bone stock 272 thru Cherry Bombs sounds like it has more hair than that vette did...! New cars... puke! most look like jelly beans and the rest are pretty much just plain ugly, with all their plastic parts and fuel efficiency! and they sound like sewing machines, with their smooth, docile idle... anyway, give me steel... rusty or otherwise... and a throaty growl, then I'm driving a CAR!! I don't know.. It didn't sound too bad to me.. My Uncle brought his new Z06 Down a couple of weekends ago and of course he had to mash the "go" pedal leaving my place.. And at least it's not a Civic with a fart-can muffler

I never liked the way the newer vettes exhaust sounds like,it just seems too wimpy for a high dollar car and I think the new camaros sound just like them.

The Corvette has been going through a purposeful transformation from a muscle car powered "sports car" for a decade or so. They are doing it successfully on a marketing and international racing scale. The target market is the international racing and high performance niche. Think of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche, BMW, Audi, etc. The era of the Scrub V8 powerplant is history for them. The next generation of Corvette (C8) is to be a mid-engine twin turbo V6. A light, well balanced road racer as opposed to the BBC nose-heavy tupperware torpedo. Be sure though, these new puny sounding Vettes are capable of a underwear changing moment. I think the most disappointing sound comes from the Dodge 10 cylinder Vipers. Under full throttle they sound like a stove bolt six on steroids much like the Ford 10 cylinder gas truck engine. Thankfully, Ford has been very attentive to the V8 sound from the Mustang GT since it re-emerged in 1982. A neighbor has a late model mid-engine supercharged 5.4 Ford GT that he occasionally romps on going up the street. No question about the sound of an American V8 power working there. The classic sound of a Full House Flathead, a well tuned and cammed Yblock or a brutal Cobra FE are right there with the "potato, potato, potato" idle of a Harley Davidson.

My buddy has a 2003 vette, It hurts my ears at certain RPM, probably because its right behind you. One reason the Mustangs sound so cool is the firing order, quite different than the smallblock chev.

I think some 6 cylinders sound pretty good. I really like in-lines but there have been a few V6s I've liked. A v8 is not the only way to get power.
The only thing that's disappointed me about a newer 'vette is how quiet it is. A car like that has no reason to be quiet. I am strongly of the opinion that the sound level of a car should be directly proportional to it's power output. A 'vette is typically of the higher power variety and should make some noise.
I think Ford definitely has it figured out, though. You know when a Mustang is coming down the road.

There's no question that the best sounding engines on the planet are the Y-block Fords and old Harleys,but there are some others that have great unique exhaust sounds.2 cylinder John Deere under load,old non turbo Cat dozer under load,6 cylinder Stovebolt with a split manifold and a pair of Smittys,flathead Ford with dual straights,B-17 at full takeoff power about 500 feet overhead,8V-71 Jimmy with shorty mufflers and tall stacks.Just a few I like and can recognize blindfolded.And one other I can recognize blindfolded,but really hate is a Huey at treetop level.

yep... thanks for reminding me about the sound of the "poppin' johnny"! my dad farmed when I was a kid and I always loved to play on the old John Deere... whenever I see an old JD, it makes me wish I could afford to have and restore one!! and Tim, thanks for the funny word picture of the typical vette owner!!...this is the first time I have ever typed the following on the computer, but I just had to "LOL" at that!! Roger the F-4 with burners.They sent shivers down my back after they dumped their load and lit the burners.Just think how that sound affected Charlie. And Tim I agree about the Merlins,but I'm particularly fond of the B-17.I grew up on a farm that was in the takeoff path of Chanute Air Force base in the 40s and 50s so I got to watch and hear a whole bunch of different planes and the B-17 is the one that still today sounds like a bomber should sound.

Okay...I can't let this slip by. I was stationed at Amarillo AFB in the mid sixties. We had a SAC Wing of B-52's and KC135 Refuelers. The runway was 3 miles long. My barracks was at the end of the lift off end about a 1/4 mile or so. When SAC called for a full scale alert, you could hear the moan of the 52's running up and heading for the runway. 12 in a row at full roar and rumble just making it off the ground I swear within inches of the end of the runway. I can remember laying in bed vibrating on the floor, damn near willing each of the bombers off the ground as the ground shook and all the windows would rattle. The AF at Amarillo also did B52 pilot training and watching some of the touch and go practices sitting in a 5000 gal. fuel truck on the flight line was scary. The wings had a built in flex of 36 feet at the wing tip so watching some of the bombers banging down on the tires and flopping the wings during practices was unnerving. Every once and awhile a hot shot National Guard F4C would buzz the place and come in low, then head straight up with the burners on. Impressive. Navy National Guard crew chief accidently jettisoned a drop tank on the flight line one afternoon while we were refueling it. Burned up two F4's and the power unit, plus crumbling all the concrete under the planes. The guy fueling the aircraft just took off running and left the fuel rig there. Luckily it didn't explode.

Feistritzer's Hurricane coming by your left window @6500! An early 50's GMC two stroke diesel.... working. ANY big prewar radial Aircraft. Similar to the inline chevy six, an early Jag XK120 thru the E types. Maybe the best though is a 12 cylinder Ferrari with open headers on a race course, at night. My Norton, or my three cylinder Triumph. Or the absolute blood curding scream of a ten grand small block Ford in an NHRA comp class. Last, a sound you'll never hear again, 4-1600 Hp Fairbanks Morse Submarine diesels at flank speed, again on a quiet night or the sound of a big Locomotive steam engine pulling a grade in the Alleghenies. Tim, that's what "Hair Shirts" were for.

My favorite noise is the generator at work. I know what your thinking a generator? Well this beast is a Cat v16, 4 turbos, and 2880 HP at 1800 rpm. That sucker makes some noise
