Rocker arm stands

I'm cleaning up some 1.54:1 rockers to swap on to my 1959 truck. I went to put the rocker stands back on the shaft during reassembly and they slid right on. My question is: Is the overflow tube going into the top hole the only thing preventing the shaft from turning in the stands? Or should they be tight on the shaft? Thanks for any help.

Normally the stands are a tight fit on shaft but should tighten up when the 2 bolts exert tension on the stands. Normally the stands are removed by squeezing on their sides in a vyce to reduce tension and fit on shaft, the same procedure is used to refit the stands, i guess how loose is loose? other folks  will add to this.

I wasn't sure if they would clamp down when tightened. There is no play, but they slid right back on the shaft without a vise. I may just bolt them down on the truck and leave the overflow tube out and see if I can still rotate the shaft. Thanks, -andrew

A slide on fit for the rocker stands isn’t a problem as long as they are not so loose that oil pressure at the oil feed hole position (2nd from the right on each head) doesn’t leak out at that particular position.  The overflow tubes do hold the rocker shafts in position so that the rocker shaft doesn’t rotate.  If the shaft does rotate, then the oil hole in the bottom of the shaft doesn’s align with the oil feed hole in the head and the rocker shaft oil supply is subsequently cut off.

As a side note, it seems that Sealed Power no longer makes replacement rocker shafts. I had bought up three sets  about two years ago from Car Quest, but I checked this week and they are no longer available. Same thing at NAPA. Has anyone uses the shafts that are on ebay from Falcon Global? I am sure that they are made in China. I was going to rebuild some sets and offer them up here on the site, but I think I need to hold on to these last two US made sets that I have.

Last I read John Mummert has new shafts & also Verne Schumann, as Schumann Sales in Iowa.

Paul is right in that Verne Schumann sells U.S. made rocker shafts for the Y.  The oil holes are already diagonally slotted and the pricing is more than competitive with any offshore stuff you’ll find.
