Am installing new fuel pump trying to fix this hard/hot start issue I have. Got a new pump today and it wouldnt work. Finally tracked one down . Just a quick question . Do I need to prime pump before trying to start car?

From all the problems you have indicated it sounds like you have an air leak on the input side of the pump. This could be anywhere from the pump inlet fitting to a loose or cracked pick up tube in the tank. No a pump does not need to be primed. Mike

An early FE pump will work if you are not running the vacumm setup. Chuck in NH

Earl;; If the pump dpes not do it, Pull sender unit out of tank and look at the bottom for junk, you may be able to get the pickup filter of f-- then put in a inline filter. Still feel it's that sock in the tank!!! Good Luck Eddie.

FYI , the pump I found is for an FE. I installed it and it wouldnt suck up fuel . Drowned the carb with gas it fired and filled up. Let it run a while shut it down and waited about 30 minutes to restart. Still had fuel in filter. Started it up almost immediately then all of a sudden the gas in the fikter was gone and engine shut down . Since then it wont restart 4 PM EST. No fuel in line or filter. Checking for that missing sock now.

Hey;; Tried to send you back an email,but site locked up; The sock is a screen or nylon screen slipped on the end of the pickup tube in the tank. They get filled up with junk and collape from the suction of the fuel pump. After the engine stops they expand back until next time. Jeezes I hope I have explained it right. HOPE that is the problem. Also may want to check to make sure you dont have a blocked vent tube. I had that problem once. Car would die, but once I loosened the fuel cap, it would restart. Used some compressed air to blow out the vent line and a big clump of spider guts, etc came out and car was fine. I know its an odd thought, but i figured id throw it out there... Ron

Not an odd thought. I am open to any and all suggestions. Will take a look at it. Thanks Afterthought: Does the 55 have a vent tube or does it use only a vented cap?

Check the flexible line going into the fuel pump. These can develop an air leak or can collapse inside
