Has anyone put a Y Block in a 50 Ford Shoebox? I am picking up a new car this Sun and am thinking that it would be cool to stick my spare Y Block in it. Any info or insight would be appreciated.

I have seen them already in 50 fords. sw florida, theres a guy running around with a paxton on it, clean swap with space.

Tim, the wife and I are both pretty excited about it. The big plus is that I can drive it home. It has a flathead straight six that was just rebuilt in it.

At one time Hurst made mounts that went from a Y-Block truck/T-Bird timing cover to the flathead frame mounts. My older brother's first car was a 51 with a Y-Block. Bought it not running with a "312". Turned out to be a 239. It was too big a project for a 15 year old and was sold still not running.

When I was in high school I had a '51 Victoria that someone had installed a Y-Block in, but suffered engine failure, and I bought the car with no engine. I purchased a used 55 Merc 292 and it fit right in. I don't remember having to change the oil pan, but I do remember the oil filter canister had been shortened to clear something. Possibly steering box or frame? It was not possible to use the filter cartridge, but nowadays there is a short spin on filter that might cure that problem.

I actually came up with it as an oxymoron becuase my cars all have dull (original) paint but all of the brightwork is shiney.

Dullchrome, I noticed you live in SoCal, I live in Costa Mesa. Once my car is fully on the road we should go for a cruise if you are up for it. Old cars look that much better when there is a bunch of them!

Installing a Y in a 50 is "somewhat" like what I needed to do in my '46 pickup. Like John M. said I used a Hurst front motor adaptor. They come up at times on ebay. I found that even a short case spin on filter interfered with the steering box, using the solid front axle. Ended up with a remote oil filter. DS exhaust was the most challenging of all. Nothing worked. Finally took a Rams Horn and had it milled 6 degrees to tilt the outlet in toward block. Barely obtained enough clearance, but it works. If you do any dropping then the truck oil pan will likely be required. With today's offerings of transmission adapters a crossmember for modern transmission would be wise. That may interfere with the stock below floor brake linkage, if indeed the 50 is underfloor. If the original radiator is good, one of the inlets and outlets can be brazed shut. Dont know about the shoebox, but on the 46 the PS valve cover is extremely close to the firewall, so much so that an Offenhauser aluminum cover with the ribs going down the backside doesnt fit. Same deal on the distributor cap. The Y left no room for battery unless it was hung on firewall. Ended up on inside of rale behind cab. With the front motor adapter an electric fuel pump will have to be used as there is interference with mechanical. Probably left out a few things.

I have done it, and actually am re-doing it right now. I put a 312 in my 53 back in 98. Has served me very well, but the time has come to freshen the motor. I use a shorty spin on oil filter (FL-300). I moved the trans forward about an inch, which gave me the valve covers a little elbow room from the firewall. There is enough slip yoke in the drive line, so no driveline mods needed. .By using the truck oil pan in it's stock form, you will need to do a little fab work on the center link, as it will hit the pan. I have seen some creative oil pan work, but I just put a small U in the center link. Car has held alignment and does not tear tires off. I am re-doing the motors mounts and some other fab work. If anyone would like any specific pictures, I would be happy to take them. Email me kustomkat@verizon.net Now is the best time as there is just a short block in the engine bay. Again, has worked great for me for 12 + years, just takes some old fashioned hot rodding....
