Getting ready to bench bleed my new 78 Granada MC. The cap says only SAE J170? fluid. I have some paint wrecking DOT 3 on the shelf....any problem with using that? I've never had a problem it.... Gary

DOT-3 is fine Gary.Its the newest rating until you go to the "synthetic" stuff.One caution though.If that can has been open more than a month I would suggest getting a fresh sealed can.

Also, If you go with the synthetic Dot 4-5, DO NOT mix it with Dot 3 as it can cause it to gel up and will be a big pain in the butt to have to flush the whole system and get that gunk out, especially in the wheel cylinders. I did this on my old Ford Ranger and found out the hard way. (I didn't listen when I was told they can gel) Just throwing out my $0.02.

Howdy,
DOT 3 and DOT 4 glycol based brake fluids are similar with only the boiling point being the major difference. They can even be mixed. there's also a new designation DOT 5.1 that is also glycol based......
DO NOT mix DOT 5 (silicone based) fluid with any other type. I wouldn't even use it. It's just not worth the hassle of completely flushing the system to switch.

IF YOU CHANGE OVER TO DOT5 AND YOU HAVE A LEAK YOU WIPE IT OFF WITH NO PROBLEM, WITH OLD BRAKE FUILD YOU HAVE A LEAK, IT EATS THE PAINT DOWN TO BARE METAL!!! I WOULD NOT USE ANY THING ELSE.
