I am changing my 1956 Fairlane to Granada Disc brakes.

What master cylinder works without much fabrication?

Thanks

Jim

I'm still using my original on my 56 bird with no problems.BigGrin

Hi Jim,  I'm using one for a '75-77 Granada that was originally equipped with discs front/ drums rear.  (Some Granadas had discs on all four corners.)  If you need a part number, let me know.  This is on a '57 T-Bird.  Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

the only downside to that, if it's working well for you is the size of the fluid reservoir.  Calipers tend to hold lots of fluid and take more as the pads wear.  That's why the size of the front reservoir was increased in later dual M/C's, so you wouldn't run out.  As long as it is checked more often, that part should be fine.

Hi Jim! Are you keeping them as manual brakes? Not going to power assisted? I just did mine over to Granada discs with an aftermarket master/booster setup and it works just like your new cars do.Stops NOW!

I would go with a dual M/C just for safety sake if nothing else. With a single reservoir if you have a leak then you have no brakes. As long as you are upgrading to disc brakes on the front, replace the M/C.

I am running Granada brakes all around, M/C and power booster...

I have the Granada set up on my 54.  Used the Granada master cyl.  If not using power, get the one for non-power brakes.  You should use the Granada combo valve.

Inspected disk installation recently on a 56 Bird. The guy thought the added stress of disk power justified oversized/HD spindles (Montclair?). If I was re-doing the whole front suspension along with a disk conversion, I might consider it since 50-plus years of duty is a lot to ask from parts so critical.

So if I want to keep the drums on my '56 Squire but want a dual master cyl, all I need to find is a Granada/Monarch master and combo valve--is this the same as a "proportioning valve"? Also want to keep the brakes NON-power. Thanks.

If you are all drum you dont need the prop valve. It is there to control pressure to the front and rear when disc/drum are used.Disc front need more pressure first before the rear as fronts do about 70% of braking.Yes it is a prop valve but also closes off either front or rear brakes in case of a line failure in either system. You would still have brakes either front or rear if the other developed a leak.

I have discs on my 55 Bird. Non power ,no proportioning valve. Stock spindles. I use a 78 Granada dual master cylinder, bolts right up. Working great for about a year now.

So I just have to get the new dual master. Thanks oldcar, appreciate it.

55Birdman,

No exhaust proximity overheating/pushrod length issues?

I've got a pushrod issue, put the stock one in, good brakes but low pedal, the one that came with the dmc is to long, gonna have to cut that one down a bit. Granada non-power conversion. How much free play???? I've been told from a good source that just a little if any.

I had a pushrod issue at first but I used the stock bird pushrod and put a bolt in the M/C to shorten the travel to about an inch or so. works fine now. The M/C fits without any issues concerning the exhaust as I have headers on the car. Can post pics if you need to see them.

You have to get a master designed for drum brakes all around as drum brakes generally require a residual pressure valve (and more residual pressure than discs), regardless of where the master is located.

All drum only masters had residual pressure valves, including ones mounted on the firewall.
