I have a 55 Merc with a 292, I'm putting dyno mat all over the floors and firewall, I just turned 26 and got this baby running and would like it to be loud enough to make some skirts blow up. I am not sure which one has the best overall sound. I don't want it to sound "tinny", but deep and snappy. I read some stuff on the hamb but want serious y block opinions. All opinions welcome!!!!
Thanks guys,
Kev

Smithy's all the way, got em on my 55 and everyone says I have the sweetest pipes in town, classic old style, original hotrod sound. Gary

I had cherry bombs on the car then changed to Smitty's. I found the cherry bombs too loud when the resonance "got on the pipe" the rumble was headache material, Smitty's are smooth and will bark.

I have some Purple Hornies that I like.
If you really want to blow up some skirts, you should look into Hookers.

I've had smittys and now have brockman mello-tones. Brockmans win hands down. Made the car sound like it has another 200 cubes under the hood.....ridiculously great sounding....imho

Thrust 26" glasspacks are very loud with 2,25" pipes and hot cam. I'd like to get lower tunes more quiet.
Not all my neighbours want to wake up in 6.45 AM, when I go to work.

CB's w/my stock 272; recommended over Smithy's by the good folk at Tbirds Southwest... sound just fine to me... following this thread myself... have you heard of Porter's? believe they are 'old time"/"old school", made in USA stuff... keep the pics coming of the Merc! Mark

I wish someone around where I live had a 292 with glasspacks. Maybe theres a 'bird laying dormant but my eyes have been peeled. It's all personal preference, as everyone has stated, but I may be leaning toward Smithys. The beauty off all these mufflers is that they are only + or - $30 bucks a piece! I'm sure there is more people with set preferences! Let's hear it!!
More pics of the Merc to come! I have a replacement radiator coming from petew. He is sending me one he just pulled out! Body work will be starting either this weekend or next!!
Charlie - maybe I'll get Hooker Headers and lay straight pipe.

rgrove - what size brockmans do you have and what manifolds/headers or pipe size do you have?

I have two 56s,one with a 272 and stock size exhaust with Thrush mufflers. The other is an .080 over 292 with 2" exhaust and Thrush mufflers. They both sound good, but the 272 sounds a lot better. So I guess the engine size has a lot to do with the exhaust tone.Judging by my experience, your 312 would sound better with something besides Thrush.

Mufflers are 17" glass packs (#FMT-1724G from van pelt parts & service). Pipes are 2", manifolds are stock wide-top pass car. Linky: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_speed-mufflers.htm Hope this helps; let me know if you need anything else. Thanks!
