On a 1955 272 with the loadomatic. Is it possible to replace the the 2bbl carb and loadomatic with 57 and newer parts, and still keep it 6 volt pos ground? Will the newer distributor work on 6 volt pos ground. Thanks

Yes.

I think you will be very happy with the improved way it runs too.Points dont care if its 6 or 12 volts,+ or - ground. They are simply an on-off switch. You could even start with the distributor and plug the vacuum outlet on the carb with a pipe plug.Connect the distributor to manifold vacuum. You will need a 57+ cap and rotor to go with the distributor.

I just did this swap on my 55 Tbird. I installed a 465 Holley 4bbl and a 57 Tbird dist. The difference in the car is amazing, much more responsive. The car is 6 volt pos ground also.

For you guys that can remember the light bulb and "Ford has a better idea", I think the light bulb finally went on when they got rid of the load-o-matic.

Pete,

Wondering if carb. & 57 dist. were new or freshly rebuilt? While a modern carb. & centrifugal advance SHOULD improve acceleration, if installed as a combo to replace tired original parts, it would be rather hard to assign the degree of increase. When I installed a re-engineered Pony teapot & pro-rebuilt Loadomatic, I was also floored by the improvement!

Thanks for the replies, I will make the switch..

Dan,

The original teapot and loadomatic were both rebuilt and functioning as designed. I replaced them with a brand new Holley 465 carb and a 57 Tbird tach drive dist that I rebuilt.

Pete,

Curious: Did you address the advance plate bushing/bearing failure (?) problem mentioned here (in regard to 57 distributors) when rebuilding?
