Dual exhaust manifolds

I have two sets of y-block, dual exhaust manifolds. I wanted to use one of them on a 61 uni with a 292 ,and was wondering what info you can give me on them,if any.The steering box will not be an issue.

the first set is  ECH-9430-A,and ECH-9431-A.

They are fairly thin in stature and it appears they point directly behind the clutch z bar, but have heard they can be swaped side for side so the exhaust can be routed from the front of the motor, to avoid any potential problem.

I just bought a great set from Charlie Burns,

 this second set is B9AE-9430-A and EDB-9431-B.

There is a big difference in part numbers. I believe they would provide much better flow

These are flat topped, much fatter in stature,but there appears to be little other difference in shape or stance to the first set. I believe these can be swapped side for side as well.

Could anyone give me any info on these. I really dont want to put in headers.

The earlier ones were the more narrow ones thru about 56. They later ones are wider and have a little better flow. They will not interchange from side to side. A factory kit to retrofit to duals supplied a driver side manifold and a plug to plug the crossover on the passenger side. I'm not sure which side the heat riser belongs on, but it sure gets in the way of column shift linkage. 9430 and 9431 were the numbers of all V8 manifolds including Y blocks and FE. On some of them the angle is not quite right where it meets the head pipe, but a doughnut usually cures that. This is one of the nice things about keeping the factory manifold on the passenger side. It fits.

Think it through.  The heads will interchange side to side if you deal with the temp sender bushing, so it stands to reason that the manifold bolt patterns are the symetrical.  This means that a given manifold will bolt to either side of the engine.  I have a right side manifold on the left side on my truck to avoid the steering box interference problem.

Well, I know they will bolt on because the gaskets are the same, but I never thought of using a pass side on the driver side. Do you use a pass side single or dual manifold? With a driver side dual, you would have to come out the front which I guess is doable. Of course I am thinking strictly of 56 which gives you very little room to play with. A factory head pipe takes a lot of wiggling.

These are going into 61 f100 unibodies which have enough room to do the fandango in. I am going to install a gibbon /cordoba front ifs in one app., and the crown vic in the other, so the steering box wont be the problem but the clutch z bar will. My other option is to go with a hydraulic clutch set up, and they are hard to find, expensive,and may still be an issue with clearance or heat.

John,did you actually go front to back with both of these exhaust manifolds? did you come across any other problems besides the sending unit? are there any pictures out there of them? can't find them in any search, but then again I never can

o.k. so now I just feel dumb...

started looking for problems on the drivers side and totally neglected the passenger side, Duh,

Seems the exhaust manifold fits just fine on that side.... if I don't need a generator,so I'm back to putting them on the correct side. If I use the complete pair it seems I will have to rework my clutch linkage to clear the z bar.  As it will be awhile before I actually will be able to install the engine, I will have to see how to do it at a later date. Maybe someone has pictures on how that is actually done.

The only other option I have would be to look for another matching passenger side manifold to turn around,but would'nt that effect the exhaust tuning due to the different pipe lengths?      I am more into driving it as a truck rather than racing it,and do not have a vast knowledge some of the rest of you have so any help would be helpful

If you can round up another passenger side EDB manifold (or other large crossection RH) use it. The pipe length difference will be maybe 15 inches(?) or so back to the muffler - for a streeter you will never notice it. 

Lots of people sell singles on ebay (due to the number of old cracked parts around there are more than a few odd sets) - give that a try.

Just adding to the mix of these various shapes and applications, i have noticed the t bird outlet flanges bolt orientation is different to passenger cars to clear things. just my 2 cents worth. regards bill.
