Hello. New one here. I have some qustions on my truck. It's a 1954 F-100 that was passed down from my grandpa. It had "what was suppose to be" a 292 in it when I recieved it that was knocking like crazy. We opted to buy the same engine to keep the swap simple. When we picked up the new engine it had 312 wrote on the heads in marker. So I don't really know what I have, and this all happend 20 years ago w00t when I was 15 years old. Now I want to start working on the truck and keep it original, but it's been in the barn for 19 years without being touched. I'd like to go with a 4 barrel carb and intake or 3-2's, but I'm not sure what I shoud be looking for or where to look for it. Should I be looking for 292 parts or 312, or will either work on it? Any help with this is greatly appreciated Smile

Sounds like you are a lot like me. About 18-19 years ago, I did a 56 F100 for my dad. Come to find out back then, it had a 272 with heads stamped "ECZ-G".

To find out what you really have in that truck, you will need to get the numbers off of the block and off of the heads. Many times the rebuilders/remanufacturers of engines (big warehouse style companies) that include Y blocks most often mix and match the head and block combo. I purchased an early 60's 292 long block that actually had a set of 1957 ECZ-G heads on it. Nice combo, by the way.

Helpful websites are like the one from Tim McMaster (www.yblockguy.com) and the one that John Mummert has (http://www.ford-y-block.com/). Both of these men have great information that will give you a chart with detailed interpertive information that will help you decode the numbers. The websites also tell you where to look for the numbers on the block (could be one of 3 different places) and on the heads (all kinds of places).

Let us know what you find out. This is great website - you are sure to get info from a good crew of fellas that know much more than I do - I'm pretty much just a Y block nut! Hehe

Sounds like that boat has sailed. 54 F-100 likely came with 239 V8 or an I-6 (something only a concours show person should want). I think the only way to be ABSOLUTELY certain you have a 312 would be to drop the pan and inspect the crank (?). Since most parts will interchange, it may be merely a point of curiosity though.

Sorry, comment a carryover of teenage prejudice against anything economy-related (I still hate 4-door sedans too). Karol Miller thinks the I-6 is underrated. I would love to see a hot one (split headers, multi-carbs, full race cam, etc.) dyno tested for torque specs.
