I am getting ready to overhaul the engine in my 56 which brought up a question. There are two different oil pump types, gerotor and spur gear. Are there any real advantages of one over the other? I have heard the gear type are noisier but have not heard much else as far as one type being superior.

Thanks for your thoughts, Mike

Here’s a recent post that gives several links to various discussions regarding oil pumps.

Thanks Ted, just what I was looking for. I did a search on oil pumps but did not come up with those, maybe a typo on my part. Thank again, Mike

Melling makes the spur gear cast iron oil pumps, but I heard that the rotor type are better. They have aluminum pump bodies but no one is making them, only the rebuild kits for them. I found one that had mild corrosion on the outside of the pump body, but I rebuilt it anyway. I'm still working on the motor and haven't really tested it out yet.
