Heater control valve leaks 57/58

Has anyone seen a control valve like this one?  The car is a 58 Fairlane but the date stamp on the heater plenum is OCT. 57....This valve is leaking around the little plunger that controls the hot water circulating.

If no one knows where to get one like this one...would there be another valve from a different year or model that would work?

Not too long ago NAPA had a repair kit for that valve.  The "street" name for it is "Ranco Valve".  Several makes of cars used them back in the day.

Thanks John, I will check with Napa tomorrow in town. I have seen lots of the kind with a vacuum line attached...how does that kind work? I see an example of the vacuum kind in Carpenters....

Gordie:

The vacuum type requires another vacuum valve.  It is inside the heater housing, and has a cable from the heat control attached to it, as well as vacuum lines.  The opening of this vacuum valve determines how far the engine valve opens.  The type you have senses the heat of the heater core and automatically maintains the temp you set with the heat control.  The vacuum type does not automatically control the heat, you have to do it manually.

Gordie, I have the same on my 57 Fairlane... heck of a time finding the correct one...

finally did on ebay I think; however, looking back, I wish I'd just eliminated the heater all together. Since I live in Houston, TX, I probably will never need the heater for my car.  In your area, you probably will, so good luck finding the right part.  Or maybe you could just remove all the insulation from your firewall and let the engine heat keep you warm that way!

I like the humour, thanks. My search so far...there is a guy in WA that will rebuild mine for $145 US. Texas auto will sell me the vacuum type and a "cricket valve" that I have to hook up to my vacuum and manifold for about $115. There is a place in Fort Worth, Old Air that says that can rebuild mine too. And there are some vacuum types on ebay. I think I will make a copper pipe u bend, hook my hoses up and hide it in my heater plenum and just store the heater core for now until one shows up on ebay.



If anyone ever sees a new heater control valve with the capillary tube, please let me know.
