Oil smoke

I put a standard air cleaner on the Vicky. The blower is off. I put in a plugged cap with tube on the oil fill and routed the tube to the air cleaner. I am also running a PCV valve and have blocked the lower crankcase breather on the block.

Problem! Now instead of smoking out the oil fill tube its pushing oil out of the dip stick tube!

Assumption? Just for conformation (and hoping for a simple solution) I believe this is due to excessive blow by. Compression is genearlly in the 135-140 area. Oil pressure is great.

Question? Any ideas? I'm pretty sure a complete rebuild is in the wings but money is tight (as usual).Smile Chuck in NH

Chuck - Which way is your PCV oriented? It should allow the carb or intake manifold to pull vacuum on the valley cover/crankcase - and operate as a check valve to keep backfires from pressurizing it - right?

If you take off the closed breather and "wing" the engine by hand does it put considerable blowby pressure on your other hand if you try to close it off?

I'm afraid my automotive engineering degree is from MMU (Mickey Mouse Univ). I'll check the pcv valve. I tried to figure it out last time the engine was out. Is there a simple way to tell direction? I think you can blow through the block end but not the carb end is that correct?Hehe Chuck

You did the same thing I did when I added a PCV system to my car..You have the valve operating backwards. It works great when it's sucking properly.

Checked the PCV it is sucking in towards the carb. I think maybe the motor is just too far gone. Oh well! I am working on another one anyway. Chuck

Chuck.  Have you considered performing a leak down test on your cylinders?  This would give you a good indication of just how well your ring seal is.  Although I like to keep ring seal in the racing engines to 2% leakage or less, I typically don't get overly concerned until it is12% or more.  The leak down test can also point you towards any potential problems with the heads but your issues with blowby does sound like the the rings.
