squealing when letting off the accelerator

Has anyone out there run into a squealing sound (it sounds like a fan belt squeal) only when letting off the gas. It does not squeal when accelerating or held the at a constant speed. The squealing is intermittent and tends to happen most when the car has been driven for an hour or two. I cannot get it to squeal while it is in park or neutral -  that would be too easySmile 

I have changed the generator and belt (for other reasons) and have taken off the power steering belt. I have also oiled the distributor and water pump.

The squealing also goes away as soon as I stick the car in neutral as it is slowing down. It sounds like it might be a vacuum leak however I have checked the hoses and they are on pretty tight.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you had a recent rad/fluid leak? Antifreeze causes your belt to squeal like a banshee...only when you want to be quiet...

Change the belt...wipe your pulleys...sound will go away.

No leaks recently and it is intermittent. I sprayed a lot of the Peratex stop squeak on it but it did not help. As I mentioned, it only happens when I let off the accelerator and it does not do it all the time.

Do you think the radiator fluid can cause intermittent squeals and only when letting off the gas. There is no squealing when accelerating. Thanks for your reply - it is driving me crazy.

Wow...funny you post this.  My 56 sunliner has been doing the same thing lately.  If i let off the gas abruptly I get a brief, occasional squeal....

Im anxious to see what solutions get posted...

Exactly what I have had...any leak of rad fluid on the pulleys or fan belts will cause squeal under high torque...just starting...changing gears....



that is my experience...



Try and get it to repeat..under load...and spray water in a fine jet on the offending belt or pulley ...when it goes away....you've pinpointed the noise...

If this problem only started after changing the generator and fan belt I would be looking at the bearings in the generator. try spraying a little WD40 around the ends of the generator, If it is the generator it is probably the front bearing.

The other thing it could be is a vacuum leak, but that sounds more like a whistle than a squeal. It will be evident when there is maximum vacuum usually when decellerating. It is easy to check, just spray the same WD40 along the edges of the manifold where it bolts to the head and also around the base of the carby. If there is a leak the engine will slow down or stumble. Make sure you don't spray near the intake of the carby as this will give a false diagnosis, but you will see what the effect of the WD40 is.

Hope this gives you somewhere to look.

Check to see if the ring on the damper has slipped back and is rubbing on the front mount.

Vacuum leak?  You might try unplugging the vacuum hose connection at the engine and plugging it temporarily.  The heater control valve at the intake can also be a likely suspect if it’s still in place.

I've had a distributor bushing "squeal like a stuck hawg" and oiling it didn't help.
