Hole at top of water pump

Hi

The water pum on my 312 Y Block has a hole drilled where the shaft runs through- what is this for? It looks like it is possibly to drip some lubrication in? Can eanyone enlighten me?

The hole is an indicator if the seal leaks and a telltale dirty watermark will appear from that hole.Smile
