Harmonic Balancer Timing Marks 1962 Y-Block 292

Guys,

I admit my harmonic balancer was a little rusty.  I wire brushed it and put a nice coat of paint on it.  After Installing it on the engine, I realized I can't see a single timing mark on the OD of it.  There is a pointer on the timing chain cover in the normal position.  There is nothing there even after cleaning the paint off.  Were the marks on a new damper very light to begin with? 

Besides buying a new one, is a timing tape my only alternative?  I don't want to just time it by ear...

There are two styles of damper that I've seen. One has the marks on the damper. The other is marked on the pointer (has 4 or 5 points) with a single line on the damper. So if you're using the single line damper with the single point pointer, you won't find anything useful for timing the engine.

Guys,

I spent some time last night stripping off the paint on the ring and found some timing marks.  They are all in an area that was very rusty.  Can't even read a single number anymore.... 

Got a trip planned to the salvage yard Saturday to pick up a better one.

Don't pitch the old one if the damper is good, it can be re-marked with some shop time on  a rotary table,,,,,,,,,
