How can such joy turn to bitter disapointment

My cars finally turned up BigGrin Got them ready at the yard carfully fired them up no probs I was taking the Fairlane down the freeway sitting on about 90 kph all going sweet... then.. at the lights 3/2rds of the way home she started to make a bang .. bang ..bang ..bang noise. oh oh.. she started to smoke a little from underneath..mmm Made it home. When in park the noise almost goes away but with load on it starts.?

Anyway the next day I fired her up and all ran sweet but I thought I should take the rocker covers off to check and as you can see... yuck what a mess.. an NO oil getting though. Such a great looking car and this inside her ! I dont know what Im going to do?? I had prepeared for a few things being wrong but not this...

I think the first thing I would do is pull both rocker shafts and see if the oil passage in the head is blocked.  If it is try to run a pipe cleaner through it, I know this is only the tip of the problem but it may help.  Next pull the dizzy and run the oilpump with a drill motor to see if you get oil to the heads, if you do I would suggest rebuilding the rocker assemblies, reinstall, adjust the rockers and see how it works.  I'm afraid that as dirty as your picture shows there may be bigger problems inside but give this a try it may be all it needs.

Looks like mine when I first got it.If you are lucky as I was the oil to the head was still flowing(passage in block not plugged).You will likely find the shaft is completely plugged with 50 years worth of crud.If the oil still flows from the oil passage in block have the shaft assemblies reconditioned as Tim suggested.Nice car-my cars twin brother.Almost-reverse colours.

If you can't get oil up to the head, try using air pressure down the hole to see if it will clear. If not, you will have to pull the heads to get things cleaned out. You definitely will have to clean up the rocker shaft and oiling holes on the rockers themselves. Make a hole in the cup at the end of the shaft, put a sheet metal screw in the hole and remove the plug. You can remove the other one by inserting a rod down the shaft and hammering it out. A good parts store or a engine machine machine shop should have new plugs.

As Paul mentioned, if you are not getting it through the head use air. I have cleared some before by filling the hole with a solvent, let it sit a while, poke down through with a wire and blow with a good high air pressure. repeat several times until you can hear the air coming out the cam bearing below. Change oil after or best to pull pan also and wash because the crud may get back in your system.

Sometimes however, the crud gets baked in the turn at the head and there is no alternative other than pull the heads, and of coarse if it is the cam bearing you will have to go further into the motor.
