Will an Explorer rear diff fit?

I found a 98 rear end complete locally with 3:73 gears for $120. Was sure I read here somewhere they would fit in a 56 Victoria but can't find it. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

Perhaps someone could tell me the width (from where the wheels mount) on a 56 Fairlane rear. My manual doesn't say and I haven't been able to find it on line.

Thanks again-

I don't know, but my guess is that it will not fit without at least cutting off the 98 brackets and welding brackets that allow it to mount in your car. I doubt it will be bolt-in if that's what you're looking for.

Width of all 54-59 rears are 57 1/4 inch, wheel to wheel mounting surfaces (goes for Birds too).

I have read in the Mustang forums that the center section on an Explorer axle is not centered and will put the drive shaft at an angle in the tunnel. Take a measurement from the rotor to the drive shaft flange to confirm this.
By grovedawg - 15 Years Ago
That is correct- the center section on the explorer 8.8 isn't centered in the housing. I just installed one in my brothers truck, and am going to install one in my Effie. I don't know the exact measurement, but if you need me to I can run over and measure it's offset for you. Let me know.

Grove-

That would be helpful. Not sure how much offset I can put up with and not hit tunnel. How did you hook up universal joint on driveshaft to flange on diff?

Old Y-Guy:     I've got an 8.8 under my '60 F100. It is 53" from calipher mt

to calipher mt. and the offset is 2" +/-. Spring pads are 39" apart.

If you have a "Pull-A-Part" yard near you, you can buy a

complete unit with caliphers for 68-78$ Plus, look for an "L"

on the ratio tag(3:73L) and you'll get a trac-loc unit to boot!

                                           Hope this helps,

It's offset 1 1/4 inches towards the passenger side. For a truck it isn't an issue, and on a car, you still might have the necessary clearance down the tunnel. Good luck.

Oh, and your second question- driveline to differential. The 8.8 that we installed is mated to a Tremec TKO500. My brother had a guy come up and measure the distance, and he's got all of the parts as well. It's going to cost my brother about $300. So, the answer is that I don't know yet, because I haven't done it on my own truck. But I will know in about 2 weeks. Smile

Also, Bill's got a good point. The two 8.8's that we bought, we pullled from our local "pick-a-part" for $75 a piece. Including the rotors, calipers, and pads. If you look on the tag make sure you see the L in front of the gear ratio! L37 8.8 blah blah blah!

I found this online and thought it might help too. In case you don't want to crawl under the car and look at the tag, that may or may not be there, you can look at the driver side door code and it'll give you the same information.

Look at the diff plate:

So if I can find a 57-59 rear it will fit on my 56? They are 9 inch rears correct? But no disc brakes. Has anyone ever tried putting disk for a, say 8.8 rear (since they sell cheap complete) on one? Trying to find a Granada rear with disc is impossible.

Just some food for thought.

Of course if someone has a 9 inch for a 56 that won't break the bank I'm interested. My car is ready for the road after almost 8 years except for a noisy rear end.

Yes it will. The spring mounting pads on the 57 and 58 I know for sure are almost the same as a 54-56, maybe 1/4 inch differerent. Not sure on a 59. The 55/56 emergency brake cable should fit the 57/59 shoes and backing plates with no problem (they fit exactly my 54). Can't help on the disc question, but as far as I am concerned the drums should be good for almost any kind of driving except road racing. I think rear discs may be overkill on street car.

I would stay away from the granada/monarch/versailles rear with disc brakes as parts are very hard to find and if the rear doesn't have all the brackets and other parts you may find yourself up the creek.

I didn't actually measure the offset when I posted my first response- I just had that number pop in my head. And because I wasn't sure I actually ran out to my brother's garage and measured the offset on a Ford 8.8 rear end. It's 3 1/4 inches offset towards the passenger side. Which is a BIG difference. I'm sorry for the mis-information and hope that it hasn't cost you money/time in planing/finishing your project.

Are you asking if someone has tried installing disks on an 8.8? Or installing disks on another rear-end like a 9 inch, or a Granada? Because the Ford Explorer's came standard with rear disks from 1995-2001.
