Got me a 58 today.. Can't wait to get it home this weekend.. It's pretty solid considering it's been sitting for 12 years but for $300 with a valid clear title you can't go wrong.. Plus the 292 and 4 speed are still in it..

She ain't pretty yet but she's mine now..

Congrats Dustin!

That looks like a great start.  If you need anything, please let me know.  By the way I still have your early wishbone and front axel.  I will try to get it on the next wagon train heading to Oregon, I just don't know when that will be.

Later...............

Thanks Charlie.. It's definately a project but it's not really missing anything big which helps alot.. From the looks of it I think I may be able to get the engine running with some tinkering.. It needs rear brakes right now too cause they froze up from sitting.. It appears to have a later model 292 with the Holley 2 barrel, dual exhaust that exits right before the rear wheels.. I should drag it home friday so I'll have more pictures of it then.. Oh and about the axle and wishbone, I'm pushing that project way to the back for now so if you don't mind i'd like to donate those to you to sell to fund your land speed efforts.. Probably can't sell them on here but you should be able to get rid of them for a good price on ebay..

Cool! I like '58s Wink  Post some pix of the engine when you can.

Well I got it home today.. Here are a few more pictures

I got this odd manifold as well.. Casting # ECR on it with this weird looking carb.. Propane application perhaps?

Gonna take some better shots of it tomorrow with my camera instead of my phone..

What you have there is a two barrel teapot. Tongue
By bloodyknucklehill - 15 Years Ago
thanks tim.. sadly enough that is the first "teapot" carb i've ever seen up close so you can guess at my confusionTongue

From what I can see it looks good!

Looks like someone has installed a RH passenger exhaust manifold on the left side to eliminate the crossover pipe.  Use of the RH manifold does away with the interference with the steering column when adding duals.
By bloodyknucklehill - 15 Years Ago
Yeah that helps me out alot having that already done.. I'm sure it'll sound awesome to.. Upon further inspection they have Glass-Packs on them and pretty short pipes so it should have a mean roar.. Got some better pics today of some of the rust-out..

And for the good surprise I got today.. I can't believe I missed this when i was checking it out before i bought it but it's already been converted to an alternator..

By mctim64 - 15 Years Ago
You even got a Ford alternator on it. Smile  Looks like the engine may have been swaped at one time, you have the wrong front motor mount.  If you like maybe Charlie has another pass. side manifold for you, just to give it a cleaner look without that patch on the old one.
By bloodyknucklehill - 15 Years Ago
Yeah i think it's a C2AE engine.. I had to point that out to the guy I bought it from when he gave me the whole, "I think the motor is from a T-Bird" story.. It's kinda funny though cause he tried to tell me it was from a 62 T-BirdTongue
By yalincoln - 15 Years Ago
hi, that extra manifold is for a 54 merc.

Pulled the valve covers off the other day.. Wasn't expecting everything to be this clean under there..

Honestly i can't believe this engine has sat for twelve years.. I think i'm just gonna replace the plugs and wires and see if I can fire it up..

By mctim64 - 15 Years Ago
Might change the oil too! Wink  Looks good.Smile
By bloodyknucklehill - 15 Years Ago
yeah i should probably do that tooTongue

My plan is to drain the current oil, then throw a couple bottles of Marvel Mystery Oil into it and let that run through it, drain that out then replace the plugs, wires and points and see what happens.. Oh and check the PCV valve too (Thanks for the tip Tim).. Taking stock of some other stuff the brakes need a total rebuild and I need to find the correct factory steel wheels for it.. the two on the front were right but the rears are 16" white Mojocks with huge tires on them and it looks stupid..

By kevinwalshe - 15 Years Ago
Mine didn't run for over 17 years and with a little work and some new parts, she fired right up. Before you fire it up, remember to prime the motor by removing the distributor and spinning the oil pump, that way the valves and cam don't run dry. Did you end up ordering the patch panels for the floor?

Not yet.. Might not even worry about those.. I remembered i had some flat sheet metal and a good friend of mine has been doing body-work on hot rods and customs since the late 60's so i may enlist his help when i get to that point.. The drivers side cab corner is a chunk of rust but that patch panel is only around $50.. Other than that all i need is a good set of front fenders.. Oddly enough the bed area is as straight as an arrow.. Thanks for the start-up tip.. I had totally forgot about doing that.. I'm hoping to start it up (or die trying) next week sometime..
By kevinwalshe - 15 Years Ago
I wish I had some buddies around here that can do sheet metal! Let us know when you get it running. Try and grab some video of it if you can! Good luck!
By bloodyknucklehill - 15 Years Ago
Well she sits a bit better now.. Got 4 of the correct sized wheels on it..

Took the hood latch off yesterday and three of the four bolts broke off.. yay.. The latch is bent up and pretty much toast which is why the hood looks like it's not closed..

If you have a welder and a hammer you can do it yourself. I've done a lot of the metal work on my effie and I've never done anything before that. I found a thread on the HAMB that can break it down for you so you can understand it's not that difficult. If you're brave enough it's not hard at all. (Especially floorboards, or patch panels for floor boards that won't ever get seen)

The link is to the thread on the HAMB is HERE

Good luck duder. I LOVE your truck!
By mctim64 - 15 Years Ago
Thanks for the link Dawg, might come in handy in the future. Smile
By bloodyknucklehill - 15 Years Ago
Yeah thanks for the link.. I do have a small welder (which I have yet to wire into the shop:w00tSmile and plenty of hammers.. I wanted help on the patch panels mainly to learn some old schoolers' body-work secrets.. The guy i was talking about helping with the body-work is a friend I met through my job at my plywood mill.. It was a particularly slow day and I had an old issue of Rod and Custom sitting on my work stand that I had been thumbing through.. Dennis had just been transfered to my department in the mill and had been called up on my work station to fix a problem (he's a mill-wright) and he noticed the mag.. Then he and I start talking about old hot-rods and what our favorites are and such.. He ends the coversation with " Tell ya what, I'll bring you in some pictures of some of the cars I built when ran my rod-shop." The next day he comes up on my work station with a giant stack of old pictures.. I thumb through these things and see some of the nicest hot rods and customs I'd ever seen, from a 6" Chopped Merc to dueces and model A's and T's.. The guy has done it all.. The last dozen or so pictures were of a Model A coupe with a SBF he built for himself.. He's a west coast guy but this was a total East coast style build with a 4" channel and no chop.. Behind one of the pictures of the engine on a stand is a dyno slip.. 498 HP at 6500 RPM.. This thing was serious.. He swore he was gonna keep it for himself but when he finally got it finished someone walked into his shop and handed him a check for $41,000 for it.. That's 41 grand when I was just a baby (mid 80's) We got to talking more then he invited me out to his house.. I went out there and checked out his current Model A Roadster he's putting together and I eyeballed his 62 Comet for months (till someone else bought it) and his 69 firebird that is all original and been in his family since brand-new.. I helped him roof his new shop for nothing more than just the pleasure of spending more time hearing his stories.. Anyway Dennis is an absolute Gem when it comes to old hot rod building and I am enjoying his friendship and the fact that he is willing to share his knowledge with me.. Of coarse he gives me all kinds of hell for sticking with a Y-block w00t

WHAT! He does not like Y Blocks!

Ya want I should fix him for Yas?

It's people like Dennis who are willing to help out that make it all possible. Us newbs would be lost without their insight and advice. Take some pics of the process you go with Dennis to repair your floorboards and throw 'em up for the rest of us to learn.
