I have a 55 fordomatic that was overhaul 22 years ago but only driven 10k since then/I purchased car in feb of this year /it has started to leak from the front seals/how hard is it to replace the  front pump seals and converter/can unit be pull with out removing eng? shop whats $400 to do it /looks like parts would be lest than a 100/any help would be a appreciated

Kanas, sounds like you may run into many problems if you are not sure of whats involved in this job, pay them the $400.00 and get a warranty with it. It will save you a lot of headache in the long run.Wink

I had a trans shop about 10 years ago.  The front seal job is almost all labor.  If you do not know how to R&R and install the converter correctly, pay the $400.  If it is leaking real bad, you may need the front bushing replaced as well.

If you dont have a convertible its a easy fix,once you get the car in the air remove the driveshaft and rear crossmember then remove the 4 bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing and pull it out and replace the seal and reverse the operation.  There are other small things that will need to be removed but its a easy job if you have the skills,now if its a convertible its much harder as the trans,bellhousing and convertor must be removed as one and it gets heavy if you dont have a lift and trans jack.  The heavy X crossmember is in the way to get just the trans out and is only lacking about 1/4 inch to do it and I fought it for a couple days before removing the trans as a complete unit,when I put the Y block back in I might do some trimming so the trans can be seperated and removed if needed again.  I will be installing a FMX which is about the same size and weight as a FOM but this time the car wont sit for very long like it did years ago and hope the seals never dry out again.
