How can I test my blower motor on my '55 Ford car to see if it is 6-volt or 12-volt. They came from factory with 6-volt. Car was converted to 12-volt before I purchased it. It runs.....but I don't want to run it for any length of time for fear of burning it up if it is a 6-volt.

If it is 6-volt......what do I have to do to run it successfully on 12-volt. Please give a detailed description. Thanks for your help~~~~~~~~~~~Ron

Just a guess, but if it's a 6 volt motor it should run like a wildcat on high setting.

To run 6 volt stuff on a 12 volt system get a voltage reducer from JC Whitney. Mine is ceramic about 3 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. Try a Google search. You can also run a 6 volt radio if you still have one.

Where does the voltage reducer install? In the wire between the hot wire (key ignition) and the blower switch or after the power leaves the switch to the blower. There are two wires (high/low) after the switch going to the blower. I think it must go before the switch using one (1) voltage reducer. Is this correct?~~~~Thanks...Ron

Ron  i just compared the blower motors on my 55 and 56 ford  the 56 blower has 12 volt stamped on it and the 55 doesnt.the 56 has one orange wire one red and one black the55 has two white wires and one black.the insulation is also different the 55 has something like a woven fabric and the 56 has the usual rubber.if you have a 6 volt and need a 12 volt let me know  Carl

Pintoplumber has got it right.

here's my two cents. If you can get a 12 v to switch out with I think youre better off - all the voltage reducers I ever used stayed really hot! I didn't trust em.

Got all the wiring problems sorted out..........the motor apparently had been switched out when the car was converted to 12-V before I bought it. The fan speeds are normal.  Thanks to all for feedback~~~Ron
