To maybe add to the questions and controversy about oil in our old engines,a while back I changed mine to Mobil 1 10-40 High Mileage oil.This is an engine with around 10,000 miles on a re-ring job.So far no indications of any problems.This past weekend a 950 mile trip at interstate speeds with the A/C on in 95 degree high humidity weather,it ran a little cooler than ever before and even with the valves set at .022 the engine is silent at idle.Anyone have any thoughts about the use of a full synthetic?

Full synthetic shouldn't hurt a thing as long as it meets the necessary requirements.
A better choice might be the regular Mobile 1 15w50 as it is rated SM and it is stated on Mobile 1's site "Mobil 1 15W-50 is also recommended for older valve train designs that may benefit from a higher level of anti-wear normally not required for newer generation vehicles."
The High Mileage 10w40 is not rated SM and they state "Mobil 1 High Mileage oils are recommended for vehicles with over 75,000 miles including all types of modern gasoline engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks." Does this mean it really is not a good choice, I don't know.

Interesting.I've been using the high mileage Mobil 1 in my 200,000 plus Explorer and F-150 for several years and just never paid any attention to the rating.I probably would have used the 15/40 in the 56,but Walmart doesn't carry it.I actually just figured any Mobil 1 has such superior qualities that any of their oils should be OK for almost any engine.Live and learn!

What a coincidence, Carson. I was just at Isky Cams in Gardena talking to Brad Iskenderian about BradPenn oil. He says the oil they sell is from the Kendall GT1 fromula and has more ZDDP than any other oil. They make a special Break in 30w oil with even more zinc than the regular products.
I quote him, "If you have primed the oil pump, set the timing and have fuel in the carburetor, you don't need any extraordinary measures such as running soft valve springs. After 30 minutes or so, drain the sump and use the regular oil."
I just missed seeing Ed, who at 89 is still coming to work and going strong.

I am a very enthusiastic Brad Penn user also, I have inspected a few cams that were broke in on it and there is just something different about the way they look and feel. Very clean and smooth, nice wear pattern.
