A while back I posted about a salvage yard find, a Mercury motor in a 57 Ford wagon. Brought the motor home today and here is what info I can see before taking it apart. Block...ECZ 6015 C, Heads...ECZ C, Intake...ECZ 9425 B, Exhaust...EDB 9430<>9431 A&B, Crank...single crescent. Any idea what this is? The crank is whats really confusing me. Gary

Gary:

All cast cranks have the single crescent.  That's where the drill went through to drill the lightening hole in the crankpin.  The ID you are looking for is opposite the crescent, it's a cast depression with one or more raised dots.  Maybe.  Some have no dots.  Check Mummert's website, he has crank ID info.

The crank flange is smooth opposite of the crescent, actually all around the flange. gary

I needed a very good light and glasses to see the indentation and dot signifying 312.  Missed it on the first two looks.  Rust and crud removal may help too.

Over the years things may have been changed out. Sounds like you may have different years' parts. Sounds like the engine may be a 292 (no id on the crank flange) year ?? , 56 "C" heads and a 57 or later intake. Might not even be a Merc - I assume you say this because it has Merc valve covers???

Yea, things often got mismatched nack in the day.  Pulled down one that had a C and a G heads.  Looked like it ran for a long time that way.

yep, going by the valve covers and it was in a 57 Ford wagon, also noticed the 57 up dizzy

I'm gonna stay in this post, the list # on the carb is 1273-1 , can't find it in my books, Gary

Hi Gary,  I'd pull the oil pan and look at the main caps.  If they are marked ECZ then you have a 312.  Chances are it is not a Mercury engine by the block numbers you listed.  The 1273-1 carb was used on '57 Ford 312's and '57 T-Bird 312 engines.  Also if you have a head off, you can check the stroke by rotating the crank, if it is 3.44" you have a 312.  Good luck, Nick Brann - K.C., MO

Just checked the rockers...intake 5&6 5751066, 7&8 ECG 6564 B2......exhaust ECR & G 6564- A2 & B2, a real mix, the pans coming off next. Gary

It sounds like someone gave it a valve job along the way and used the "C" heads off a '56 Merc.  Oh, and you should always be grinning ear-to-ear when you find a 312.  Good score!

Just measured the lightening hole on the front throw, .870, roughly 7/8, far from the 3/4 but not 15/16 either. This engine is becoming an enigma, it is, it isn't, it is, it isn't, time for a brewski, it's 5:00 somewhere, Gary

Gary:

You obviously have the pan off, pull a main cap and measure across the bearing.  2 5/8 equals 312, 2 1/2 equals 292 or smaller.

2 5/8 is my number, back to a smile, Gary

does anyone have a picture of the timing marks on the 312 balancer, I see a 6316 stamped on it. I can vaguely see some marks and #'s, just want to be sure. Gary

I got the marks figured out but when I took apart the rocker assy. one side never had the oil holes lined up, no oil to it or out, the rockers are oblong and the shaft is a mess but otherwise it looks pretty clean. Last driven in '71 Gary
