Hi, I have a 59 Ford Custom 300.  I don't know jack about Fords, or cars from the 50s altogether.  Anyways, the trans is a 3 speed manual with the shifter protruding from the trans tunnel.  I don't think these came stock like this but I don't know.  How can I identify the trans?  I was also told that it had a "Hurst shifter".

A floor shifter did not come from the factory. It could very well be a Hurst. If so, the shifting mechanism will be stamped with the word Hurst right under the big bolt that holds it together and it will say Mystery Shifter or Dual Pattern or whatever line it was. If its a regular 3 speed, the same transmission would bolt to the bell housing from 1949 through 1962. Different years had different variations, but they were all basically all the same built by Borg Warner.
