not sure if a brake question is allowed on this site, but here goes.
my buddy wants to put power disc brakes on his 60 edsel. we found a site, scarebird classic brakes, that sells a caliper brackets, and give you all the part numbers to go and get the remaining stuff from autozone and NAPA, like rotors, bearings, calipers, master cylinder, etc.
the caliper brackets form scarebird are for 1957-1968 galaxie, master for 68 galaxie, and rotors are for 69-69 mustang, calipers form early s-10, etc.
do any of you have any info on a power front disc brake install for the 60 edsel ? trying to get all the info we can before we tackle the job.
also, going with just a new dual master and front discs, no power booster, is it a real noticeable difference over the stock manual drums, or should we bite the bullet and go with the boosted master cylinder ?

I've noticed a little improvement over the standard drum brakes but the big difference is the sense of security, the dual master is so much better than the little single unit as far as safety. Gary

Hi Garry! The big improvement comes when you ad power to the discs.Mine stops NOW with very little effort with the right foot.I also added the selfadjusters to the rear and it stops straight.Well worth the extra cost.The guy I got mine from is $165.00 dual master and dual diaphragm booster.

my buddy will soon pull the trigger on a boosted power brake conversion for the edsel.

Just wanted to add to my last post.Because the disc brake setup is not "selfenergizing" like the drum setup it actually takes more pressure(from your leg) to squeeze the pads against the rotor.This is where the booster comes into play. By the way this type of post can go into the "technical" section.Someone may yet move it over to tech.Welcome to the site.I dont think I have run across any members working on an "Eddy".A little variation from the norm.Nice to see.If you are looking for a source for the booster/master have a look at Ebay # 230512326645 and #330461611473.I have purchased 3 of these myself and a couple of others have bought from Dave also.He will sell direct if you call him and at a little better price usually.His # is 575-544-4729.Very friendly guy.

I put Granada disc on my 54. Non Power. I find there is less pressure required to stop than the old drums. Plus the fact they stop better. The Edsel may be a heavier car and would benefit from power discs, but it my case power is not needed.

I did the same, used 77 Granada spindles, 77 Granada dual res. master for standard brakes. ALL parts were off the shelf at Napa and the car now stops on a dime. Total cost was under $500.00 to boot, WELL worth the investment!!!

Master Power Brakes (MRBrakes.com)has a complete kit (all the parts needed including booster) that goes right on the original spindles. I have been considering their kit for my 55 Mercury. Anyone have experience with their kits? They list the Ford kit for my 55. Does anyone know if the Mercury has the same wheel bolt pattern as the Ford? Thanks

Anyone else get the "new parts" email notice from CASCO? They claim dual master no safer than OEM single type without their "combo valve".
Did everyone who upgraded to a dual master cylinder merely waste their time/money? If so, then how did the "dual master is safer" myth get started, I wonder? Have always heard that upgrade recommended as a way to maintain some braking if a line fails.

ok guys, been doing a lot of searching.
my buddy ordered a set of caliper brackets for the edsel from scarebird.com. seems like a great guy, answering all of our questions.
then we are getting a booster, master and prop valve form another good source on e-bay.
then all other parts are over the counter, like 68-69 mustang rotors, s-10 calipers, etc.
we will let you knwo how the conversion goes, but it will be a few months before he gets all the required parts and get them installed.

I had passed the scarebird info along to a club member on 57fordsforever, he said everything worked well. He didn't want to pull his spindles apart or mess with toe , camber, caster, or lowering the front end. So that being said, its a good fit. He did say the mustang rotors were a bit pricey, but recomended the kit.
