Visited my friend Alex's shop last night and he showed me a 57 4 barrel intake that had been modified. It turns out someone had "hogged out" about a 2" semi-circle, on each divider, between the upper and lower ports of the intake! (right where the intake meets the head). I told Alex that I thought this intake would now be junk, as this would cause a LOT of turbulance of the air / fuel entering the head. Am I right or wrong and has anyone heard of this type of mod to an intake??? Unsure

If the heads the intake was used with received the same treatment, it may be alright. Probably no good for stock heads, though.

Oh, wait, you mean the divider is partially removed. That's probably no good.

That is exactly what I mean. The metal that divides the upper port and lower port on the intaked runners has been removed about 2" back from the face where the intake meats the head! Turing it into one open port. Since the head would be two separate ports, in my eyes, this would create a LOT of turbulance here!

I agree. I just tried to run a Weiand 6X2 manifold on my 57 and where the intake runners should be it was just an open square port at the cyl. head. Should have heard that thing backfire when it was running! Haven't given up on the project yet, but put it on the back burner.

What was the guy thinking?

I agree, the intake is now a nice boat anchor.

Wait a minute...a 6X2? I want one like that!!w00t

Will that make it back fire a lot? I've only had my engine running a couple times, and under any load it backfired like a machine gun (although only under load).

"Flying"  your issue sounds more like ignition breakup if it only happens under load, but I could be wrong.
