Fuel Pump Not Priming.

Hey guys,

I finally got to replace the fuel system on my 57 T-Bird (312 4V).  Everything was taken off and replaced.  New fuel tank, lines, fuel pump, filter and carburetor.  Everything was plumbed, and 5 gallons of fresh high test was put in the tank.  My question / problem is that it doesn't appear that the fuel pump is getting a prime.  I would think that 5 gallons would be enough to get the job done.  What is the secret.  Is there something special I have to do the first time.  We have poured gas down the carburetor, and the engine will fire but I am not even getting fuel as far as the filter.  We pulled the line off the input side of the filter, and when the engine turns over, you can feel the pump trying to pump.

So what's the secret for getting the first prime.  I'm going to put another 5 gallons in tomorrow and if that doesn't do it, I guess I have to start taking it apart to see where I'm getting fuel and where I'm not.  I think the problem may be where the fuel line connects to the tank.  When it leaves the tank, the line goes up and over the frame rail (higher than the tank).

Also, the new carburetor, a Holley 1848 (465 CFM) has a banjo fitting which is not the right type for the 57's fuel lines.  If I use the fitting off the old Holley 1850-9 600 CFM, the air cleaner hits the fitting and it won't sit down on the carb right.

Does anyone know of a special fitting, or a way around this problem?

Found out that the new fuel filter is completely sealed off.  no gas can pass through the filter. Seems like whatever glue / sealer they use to hold everything together, coated the inside of the filter, and sealed it off.  Took the filter out of the bowl, and the fuel pump filled up the bowl.  problem solved.

The factory fuel inlet fitting should work on the new Holley L1848 carb without issue.  Do you have an original air cleaner or a replacement?
