Just bought my 57 F100 with 272 motor. One of the things I definitely want to change is the oil filter set up. It currently has the old canister style. I had another vehicle long ago with this set up and I remember it being a major pain. Are the spin-on adapters fairly easy to install and who sells the best one? Thanks.

I'm sure if you watch ebay you can find a used setup. Heck, I have an extra I'll sell if you want. email me bigwin56f100@yahoo.com and I'll send you a pic of what I have

The 223 Ford six cylinders use exactly the same spin on oil filter adapter plate arrangement which makes finding these in the wrecking yards somewhat easier.  New assemblies are out there but someone else will need to point you to them.

For switching from the cartridge filter to a spin on filter arrangement, simply remove the old nut and flat thin plate and thoroughly remove the old gasket.  If using a used spin on adapter plate, insure that the center of the plate sits at least 1/16” above the rest of the plate when the plate is laying on a flat surface.  If it’s not slightly raised in the middle, then there’s the possibility it will leak oil.  With a new gasket in place on the block, put the adapter plate over it and with ‘TOP’ at the top, and tighten it down with the special hollow stud/nut assembly.  Install the new filter and you should be good to go after thoroughly checking for leaks once the engine is running.

The kits are readily available. The people who sell old Ford stuff have them. I think they probably all come from the same factory. The only problem I have encountered installing them is that the nut holding the old plate can be difficult to remove. Somewhere I have a socket that I ground the chamfer so that the broaching goes all the way to the end of the socket. I think it is something like 15/16. I would find the correct wrench size and grind a socket down before I ever started. If you round off the nut, it can be really difficult.

I did reply to this before but I dont know what happenedCrazy Do as Kenneth said with the socket. I had to use a rattle gun , thankfully I just got it in there.  When you get the kit the gasket is very hard to hold in place. Rick gave me a trick. Lightly use contact glue on the new plate and gasket stick them together and then put the plate and gasket upto the block and do it up. Trying to do it without failed on me the first time...

I've had to use a chisel and big hammer to get the nut off before. They can get really stuck sometimes. A little bit of grease helps hold the seal in until you get it set. Chuck in NH
