Fellas- With the wife outta my hair for the weekend, I was able to swap in the new intake I bought  . After I buttoned it up, I decided to head out on the highway- wound it up to 70mph (first time ) everything checked out good, and then I glanced down at the tach... Holy guano, Batman- 4000 rpm's! Is it just me, or does this sound a little extreme? How far out of the Y's "comfort zone is this? I figure the 'Ol Man must've swapped in a 411 or close to it at some point. This is gonna use a lot of fuel, I fear...

you would want it to be in the neighborhood of 2000 to 2300 rpms. 4000 is in my opinion too high at 70 mph.

4000 rpm won't hurt it for the short term. I'm sure if you went out and did it every day, the engine, like any other won't last as long. The few times in the past that I have made it out of the state, before the 5spd, I cruised at 3500-4000rpm which is just about 70-80mph by my speedo. It was usually to Orlando which is just under 500 miles one way. It did fine.
I don't think it's extreme but it's not really ideal for cruising.

It all depends on what you want to do. It would be nice to have an 5th overdrive to cruise in, and a 4th that would put you back up to 3500 at 70 for some RPM passing room. That's about where my pickup is.

Duck - You are running the '57 rear end - the 9 inch? Try looking around for a 9 inch center section with a different gear set. You may be able to make a change for less than you think. There was a 9 inch (open) center section on Craig's list here last week (gone now) with something like 3.23:1 gears for 31 spline axles - $250

Dang Duck, If my Ciphering is correct I would have to have 4.56's in my rear with my 27" tall tires to spin that fast at 70 mph...

I figured it was "spun up" pretty good. (I gotta say though, she's a blast around town ) The last part of the story for restoring the 'bird in the first place is I intend to drive it down to Key West and get a pic of it parked in front of the marker that denotes the furthest point south in the US. I have an old pic from '58 with the car parked there, and thought it would be cool to do it again . With the motor turning that fast though, making the run down 75 could get pretty pricey fairly quick. At this point I'm wondering if maybe the old two lane route would lend itself more to slower speeds and more to see/ enjoy (?). I do have another axle (9") out of a '57 parts 'bird that had an automatic trans, I just doubt it would be usable as it sat un-moved outdoors for so many years. Well, I'll get 'r sorted out eventually, I suppose...  -Thanks- /Duck

Take the gear out and check it. You'll be suprized how long a rearend can set without internal damage. Worst part is if it gets moisture in it. I would definately check it out. I might be interested in the 4:56's if the price was right. Chuck in NH
