Does any one know if the 55 and 56 A intake manifolds are the same port wise? Any differences other than the vacuum port located in front of the carb on the 55 (and not drilled on the 56)? If the 56 is drilled like the 55, is there any specs on how deep, etc to drill? Thanks

Any body?"???

There is no 55 A manifold. It is a 56 part. The 55 4bbl manifold has the choke mechanism on the manifold. I would guess the 55 and 56 manifolds have close to the same ports. They use the same intake gasket.

Thanks John, I forgot about the choke thing

Paul: I installed a vacuum tree from 73 Torino on the firewall when I needed vacuum for the power brakes. I have a "B" manifold however used the same setup when I had the "A" manifold installed. I also drilled the manifold brass fitting out internally to get as large an orifice as possible for better vacuum on the accessories. What carb are you using that does not have the fitting at the back of the carb. When I had the "A" manifold and Lincoln teapot on the crown I took it to a machine shop and had them mill the vacuum port at the back of the carb as the Lincoln carbs just have a boss, no threaded opening for a fitting.

Marv - what I have is a 56 Bird with the stock A manifold and teapot, which I plan to keep.. I am installing a C-4 trans and I need another vacuum port for the trans. The teapot has a fitting at the base of the carb for power brakes, distributor and wiper vacuum (which I use for a cruise control) as I have electric wipers.
Basically, I think drilling the intake in the boss in front of the carb may be my best bet, but I am not sure how far to go to make sure that I get full vacuum (both runners??). I initially thought of drilling the intake for a fitting about where the B manifold has the fitting in the back, but it looks like the metal at that spot may be too thin.
I like the tree idea - got another one around?

I have a 55 A manifold,4BBL. I drilled and tapped a hole in the rear of the manifold, can"t remember if it was 1/4 or 3/8 pipe thread.there is enough material to tap the casting,I just missed the horrisonal divider, should have drill just a little bit lower.Just getting it running, hope I have enough vaccumn for power brake booster.

Paul: If all you are going to use the extra port for is the vacuum modulator, I wouldn't worry about drawing from both ports. There is no flow to speak of to the modulator, so modulator nor engine performance would be affected by the location of the hose fitting.

Paul:
I don't have a spare vacuum tree around at the moment, however, I am gong to the bone yard soon so could look for one. These were on nearly every full size Ford's in the early 70's.
For the modulator you could get a 1/4" plastic tee and tee the cruise control line. Ford did that for the vacuum wipers and heater switch from the factory (original tees were steel) .

Marvh and Hoosier - thanks for the info - I was thinking of using the cruise line for both the trans and cruise but was worried about it being too much. You have eased this problem. Marvh - thanks for the offer of the vacuum tree, but if both of you think the cruise line I now have will be enough, I will not need the tree.

Paul- FWIW, I drilled the cast iron intake to source the vacuum advance. When I changed over to the aluminum manifold I didn't want to drill any holes in it, so I drilled and tapped the fitting that sources the brake booster an wipers. I drilled into the surface that faces the firewall. Looks factory and seems to work OK. /Duck
