I got off the phone yesterday with Tony at Green Sales. He had 10 in stock. They are 1958 Ford Neutral Start Switches. In 58 Fords started in Park and Neutral, and a direct bolt on to 56 and 57's and with a little work 54's also. The switches were easy to come by but not so now. It is Motorcraft part No.SW781 I did pay $51.00, a lot more than they use to be.. Phone 1-800-543-4959.

Hey Gerry, What are the modifications to make it work on a 54? I really didn'y know about this and it would be just great to change over & be able to start my Merc in Park. When I first got the car I didn't know it would only start in neutral & I changed out the switch with a new one for nothing !   $51 bucks is quite a bit but would be worth it to me.  Thanks, Mike

At the bottom of the shift lever shaft down at the steering box there is a lever that the shift rod hooks up to It must be changed to a 56 or 57  and I am not sure what is on a 55. Then the muffler clamp looking part that holds upthe shift tube  must be changed to a 56-. And the switch from 58.

I know $51.-00 sounds like a lot but Taking it out of park and going to neutral to get it started can be tricky if you are on a hill. Also on my 54 it was disconected completly even more danger... I hope you can understand my explanation. Gerry

Gerry: On the other hand, in the case of my 57 4 Dr Ht (Town Victoria) it makes the car which is essentially not securable, less likely to be stolen!

Paul that makes sense but in my case my ford is "hand controled". I would have to put the car in neutral without it running so the power brakes would not work well, then get it started. Start key on the left and hand controll on the left was just too cumbersom. Who ever built the car (a 54) had installed dual exhaust and there was no room for the switch, so they left it off. That was dangerous. Now with the 58 switch and 56 switch mounting clamp all works great. Gerry
