Yesterday, I took the car to Muncie Dragway in hopes of evaluating my latest head gasket installation, even though the weather was iffy.  While sitting in the truck hoping the rain would stop, who should pull up beside me in their pickup, Rob and Steve Sheets, some former EXPO competitors.  Remember the black '59 Edsel?  While talking with them, who should show up at the truck but none other than Danny O'Day.  Dennis and Glen discussed him in earlier posts.  By the way, he is happy with the hood that Glen sold him and Dennis delivered.  Danny and I spent quite a while together discussing lots of engine stuff.  Danny is going to build another Y, he had one as a teenager.  There was to be a big nostalgia race, but it got rained out.  But I feel I had a good day anyway.

John, i just returned from annual week long hotrod run to Valla beach resort north of us, while the weather turned cold and gloomy and eventually rained for days, 1st time in 34 years! we sat around campsite and caught up with heaps of guys, exchanging stories and events from our teenage days, some we all had forgotten luckily. It was a great time and camaradie and a pleasant drink was shared. Had 4 hr drive home in the rain in my y block A coupe, again only one there with y block and allways raised comments and revived memories of earlier days for most.Smile

Isn't Danny a nice guy to talk to.
By Hoosier Hurricane - 15 Years Ago
Yes, he's a great guy to talk with.  He not only offers a lot to the conversation, he listens with interest also.  First time I've met him.

Sounds like a good day even though the weather was bad. Danny seems like a great guy just talking on the phone. By the way on another topic, I talked to Harry Hutton yesterday, he is leaving out this morning to meet Ted at the EMC site and then heading out to CO to pick up his new project, a 1959 Merc.

John, I looked at the aerial photos of Muncie Dragway. Am I seeing a grass strip between the lanes? How far apart are they? Looks like you cross a bridge or culvert in the shut down area over a run.

Dennis:

Good eye.  The grass strip is about 4 ft wide.  It also has a slight drop off from the pavement, interesting if something happens and you swap lanes.  Yes, there's a culvert under the shut down area.  Also one under the return lane, and the lane makes a slight S curve through the guardrails on the return strip.

John, I'm guessing the grass strip is level with the paved lanes?

Not just a good eye, a good map program. That's why I could see your bean hauler aside the barn, 2 cars behind the barn and even the windmill.

Dennis:

I paid a little more attention Sat.  The grass strip is more like 8 ft wide, and it was not filled the last time the track was repaved, so it is not level with the track surface.  This year is the 50th anniversary of the track,   I confess to running there in my '56 Ford when it opened.
