The stock rear end came apart and trashed the ring and pinion gears and messed up the housing. Has anyone found an 8.8 inch replacement that fits a 56? I believe the axel flange measurement is 56 1/2 inches. That measurement is critical given the with of the wheel wells. I haven't measured the axel housing flange width. Is there anything that bolts in or is it all "cutting for a custom fit" on this one? Thanks for your input in advance.

I had the 9" diff out of a '59 Fairlane in my Ozzy 58 which is the same as 55-56. I did have to move the spring hangers from memory but had no problem with clearance. Used to run 265.50/14 on the back with the correct back space to fit in the opening. It was a long time ago that the wheels were done so don't recall what the backspace was.
These diffs are real hard to find in Oz as in their day everyone wanted them for the 70's Falcons as they were a bolt in replacement.
Hope this helps.

To replace a 55/56 rear end I believe a 9 inch from a 57/59 Ford is a bolt in. As these are in high demand of 65/66 Mustang owners they are scarce and expensive. BUT, the 8 inch 65/66 V8 Mustang rear that they replace are plentiful and CHEAP so look for one of those. They will not survive 400 HP but you won`t have that. They are very easy to find. Pete

55/56 rears are rather easy to find and they are not that bad. You need to consider the ratio too. Do you have a 3 speed, an overdrive, or an automatic. Each takes a different ratio to preform good.

I hope I didn't give you a bad impression of these rear ends. I run mine hard with a McCullouch supercharger and havn't seen any problems (knocking on wood here) Chuck
