Lil' help here..?! I need to fit seatbelts in my '56 4 door and there are no original mounting points. I just bought some generic lap belts before it left the States, Im a bit unsure as to where they go... In the front do they go around the outside of the seat or both parts of the belt pass through the seat? They are the old flip catch chrome style does that go towards the middle of the seat or to the outside [door] its attached to the longest part of the belt. Pics anyone? Cheers !

The belts pass through the seat not around.I have the buckle part in the middle on both sides as you will avoid getting the buckle damaged closing the door if it falls off the seat getting out of the car.I think mine are 66 inch long and are plenty long enough front and back.

Thanks Mark, IS there problems with the buckle being on the outside [ door side when done up]? I'm just asking as it's oposite to all modern cars... Or am I thinkin' about it too much

I'm with OLDCARMARK on this. Buckle to the inside as this with prevent paint, buckle and tin damage if the buckle happens to fall off while on the outside. Yes, today's cars have the buckle on the outside, but they are retractable so they do not usually fall out.
If you are putting in retractables, then you can have the buckle to the outside.
Unless you have had the rear pans replaced, there should be spots where the seat belts should go. Remember, this is the first year of Ford's safety interior.

Kool.. so the long belt with the buckle attached comes from the middle.. If I take the rear seat out can I see where they should go. . I take it if I get under the car it should be obvious...?

Now thats the stuff Marv ! Bit hard to see the second diagram behind the seat.. Is that showing the belt mounted on the hump?

Yes, factory mounted it on the hump or the side of the hump. They used a U type of bracket with two drilled holes. First hole 1" off centre line. 4 9/16 back. shoot me a PM with your email address and I can send a better picture as this site shrinks them .

There is no online installation pictures of the seatbelt that I am aware of.
The pictures I posted are from my copy of the original 52-56 Ford installation instruction sheet.

Hey guys....so are the mounting points already in a 1955 as well? Specifically, I have a '55 Club Sedan. I'm assuming that if there they'd simply be pre-drilled holes in the floor pan?
Last question (for now! :-) ) : how exactly does one remove the rear seat in order to perform the install?
To be honest I wasn't really looking to install belts this year, but I feel awful that my two little girls always want to go cruising with their old man but I can't take them. Saw beltsbtgis past weekend at the Syracuse Nationals and felt it was time.

Theres no pre-drilled holes.I may be wrong(MarvH will know) but I think all seatbelts in those cars were installed at the dealership not the factory. When you bought a set of originals they included a diagram with all the measurements of where to mount the brackets. If you go to an aftermarket provider of seatbelts they usually sell an installation hardware kit separately.I recently purchased a pair of NOS Ford belts for 55-56 Ford cars of a fellow on Kijiji for $100.00 in the box with all the mounting brackets and instruction diagrams.I turned around and resold them to a dealer on Ebay for $350.00.He listed them on Ebay for $700.00.Didnt sell but at least I made a little to put into my car.If you go back in this post MarvH has copies of the installation diagrams and I think he would provide you a copy if you contact him.The rear seat cushion clips into 2 brackets on the floor. If you push back on the cushion and lift at the same time it should release.

For it's worth I had installed three inertial reel seat belts across the front of my mailing ute. I cheated somewhat and had professionals install them. The same people who fit child restrains are trained in fitting seat belts. One of the previous owners had fitted seat belts at some time as the pillars had been drilled and the floor had holes in several locations. These belts had been removed when I bought the car. It was my priority to have them installed. The the floor fittings have a captive nut attached to a large metal plate to stop them from pulling through. None of the floor mounts (or any mount) is shared. Here in Australia seat belts need to comply with safety standards and when not using fixed manufacturer mounting locations need to be mounted to a standard. The inertial reels are safe do not fall out the door damaging paintwork and are comfortable. It doesn't matter if they are not original. The inertia reel seat belts improve safety, comfort are reduce the chance of damaging paintwork. Cheers Warren

Check out this site: classiccarradiodoctor.com/fordseatbelts. A little hard to read but I think the info that you need is there. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Yea, used PM, but I know sometimes that can be buggy....not necessarily here, but I know I've had issues over at Jalopy Journal before. I may end up getting someone to install these, but will probably be giving it a go myself. I'm not sure now....replacing the front shocks, springs and steering equipment (back to the drag link) next weekend, and last night my turn signals died (you'll be seeing a thread on that in a minute!! ), so now it's a matter of how much time do I have and how much do I want to get done before the season's over. But whoever does it now, it needs to get done. I'm tired of having to tell my girls they can't ride with me Side note: replaced the rear leaf springs and shocks a few weeks ago, and am loving the difference. I can't wait to get the front end done. That and new tires and it should feel like riding in a new car. Now, if I can just remember my hand signals again....
