There were a number of 182HP Specials that came out of the Dallas assembly plant in 1955 with the U engine code instead of being identified in the VIN with the M code. These were the 4 barrel carb equipped 272’s with the better heads. Don’t know if this was a common occurrence with all the assembly plants in 1955 or just the Dallas plant but definitely something to watch out for.
You might check the heads for the ECL-B or ECG-A head casting codes as these were used on the 182HP Specials. The ECL-B identifiers are located under the valve covers but memory fails me where to look exactly for the ECG-A codes. If you’ve got a matching pair of either of these heads, then someone went to the trouble of putting the whole power pack package on your engine or it came that way from the factory.
Ted, the ECG-A, B,C,D numbers were cast between the exhaust ports, congrats on fantastic EMC results, a big effort and result.
