Y-guys: Since my post from earlier today I guess I'll be replacing my cam.

Suggestions on a cam that will have good sound and decent performance.

Not worried about mileage. (270 Isky was in it and was ok).

292 stock with 600 holley and headers.

                                                   Thx Bill

Bill, I bought a 'marine grind' from CamCraft in Maryland. I haven't installed the engine yet, so I can't give you a first hand report in its performance. It was their recommendation and one reason I liked it was the LSA of 112 degrees.

Question for you; when you bought the cam did you also buy lifters? I have heard that there were at least two and maybe three different materials used in lifters over the years and that it is important to match the lifters to the cam cores or buy a matched set of lifters and cam.

BTW, be sure to read up on using ZDDP like in STP oil treatment or GM EOS or WalMart Tech Lube oil treatment.

I've head that diesel motor oil has a form of ZDDP that is not quite the same as gasoline engine ZDDP. In fact I read a research paper that compared the two using electron microscopy. Rather different. Get the gasoline ZDDP. Some off-road motorcycle engine oils have it, too.

Bill.  Upon pulling out the bumpstick and verifying that you have a lobe slowly destroying itself, I'd suggest contacting Isky and see if there are some warranty considerations you can use to your advantage.  I'm assuming you used the Isky lifters with the cam?

Can you provide any details such as what oil you've been using, initial camshaft break-in procedure, engine idle rpm, and the such.  These may or may not at least give a clue to what caused the premature wear but it's a starting point in insuring the same problem isn't repeated.

Unfortunately, there are a myriad of reasons for a lobe to prematurely wear but the oil as of late seems to be at the top of the list.  During the tear down, just insure that the lifter turns freely in its bore as that also comes to mind in this particular instance.  Having worked with a multitude of rusty blocks, those lifter bores must be adequately clearanced or the lifter will not properly rotate and thus speeding up the wear process on the lobe.

Bill,

If isky won't do something. then I'd suggest checking with Mummert. He has a number of grinds and lifters available. He will also tell you what to run depending on the combo and intended use.

Bill: Further, did you by chance use Lifters that were manufactured "offshore" in the last few years? There have been a few articles in some of the Auto Mags, including Y-Block Mag about lifter /cam problems, involving these inferior lifters. A few years ago there was apparently a shortage of lifters, due to the shutdown of a couple of major suppliers. These ofshore outfits stepped in, but were supplying sub standard lifters which has led to reports of failures in "flat Tappet" engines. So, check the situation out fully when purchasing the new Cam & Lifters & follow the manufactures instructions carefully.
