We have created a MONSTER BigGrin

Engine is powerfull. Tuning of those 48 dual dellortos is quite time taking and all the setups are not even close to exellent, put it really pushes you to the seat. Too bad that our two step automatic slips very badly when it shifts to second gear. That thing occurred at last years drivings when the tranny was hot and now with extra power it can hardly take that second. We didn't even bother to adjust the bands because we thought that it would do the task at gravel. It didn't. Now we need to fix that transmission before we go to Drag Race that machine. But, our feelings after the Race was that this engine might be a little unsafe at that frame when doing some flat out driving. And we have even discussed about building a nostalgia dragster for that turbo set up. Does anybody have a leftover frame for us w00t

I also have several hundred pictures from the Freak Race, Seppo is correct, the Hollowhead machine is pretty spooky, WAY too much power for that loose dirt.  I'll try to get some stuff up tonight, ended up going  back to my hotel room last night and working till midnight Finnish time. Jyrki and i amy go out running around this evening.

Was the problem in chassis flex, suspension or what? Sounds like you may have created a real Monster! You can always box the frame, stiffen it all add a nice roll cage and go straight ahead racing! There is a place in Mass. that has rebuild kits for the Ford O Matic if you want to stay with that.

Main problem was a slow steering and too much power on gravel. If you push hard it was right away going sideways and two hands were not enough...w00t

Places like "Speedway Motors" sell a steering quickener for dirt track racing. Take a look at them. Also Jim did a conversion to a Mustang/Cougar power steering box that is close ratio (I think it was 4.5 turns lock to lock). Ask him about it.

Have you checked the adjustment on the transmission kick down linkage? It can have an impact on 2d gear shifts. The transmission has internal valving controled by the rod.

What type of suspension are you running? Sounds like a matter of "dialing in" the chassis and steering to meet the engines needs. Remember sometimes in the turns slower is faster! You can use the straight away speed to overcome the slower tight corners. As I said a Monster is truely born! Chuck in NH

Actually, Jim went back to a totally stock box. Too many fit issues with the Cougar box. I did have to get a special adapter to mate the 3/4" round shaft out of the box to the 1" Double D style (GM) at the bottom of the IDIDIT steering column. The biggest problem with the Hollowhead machine was just way too much power and not nearly enough traction. The dirt was VERY dry and loose, looked like a West Texas dust storm in full swing! Man, you talk about something that sounds wicked? Those twin turbos whining are a totally unique sound!

And our MSD 6AL was set up with only 5000 rpm limiter...BigGrin

I just took oil pan off of the tranny and there is no chips from anywhere in the oil and the oil is clear. So maybe adjusting the rear band will help us.

Is the kick down rod connected from the throttle linkage? You need it! Chuck

We have a cable connection from tranny to the carb throttle plate axle and it is set so that when the plates are at wide open position, the kick down lever bottoms. Should the lever bottom before plates are fully open?

Without the old style linkage I'm not sure how to adjust it. Maybe one of the guru's can jump in. Do you have a speedo? Where does it upshift to 2d in automatic mode, low power driving? Should be 30 to 40 mph. Chuck

Here are a couple of shots of the "lost motion" linkage on my '56. The carb throttle hits the internal stops, then linkage contines to rotate in the slot to further lower the Fordomatic pressure control rod.

The transmission control is the lever just above where the screwdriver is inserted and it is rotating downward as the throttle advances. must be another 15° of travel there.

Does it have a complete aluminum case or is the bell housing cast iron? If its not all aluminum then it would be a Cruis O Matic and the shifts would be modulator controled. Chuck

It's all-aluminium 2-speed trans from '60 Fairlane and no vacuum modulator. I agree that it needs pressure from that kick down linkage, but as Hollow Head said we don't know how to adjust it because it's now done with cable.

And the explanation to that mystery BigGrin. When the carb lever moves, it first tightens the cable and pulls the kick down lever to it's stop by the force of that spring. And when the kick down is at the end of it's travel, the spring lets the throttle plates continue their travel to flat out position. The spring can also be installed to the kick down lever cable attachment point, if that works better.  So, should the kick down lever bottom before or after the throttle plates are fully open? And is that so, that in 2 speed tranny the rear band controls only the reversing and the front band controls shifting from first to second?

I'm sorry I can't tell you how the two speed kick-down works - but your plan looks like it has a chance of working. I've got a few questions tho....

Does the kick-down lever "spring return" to the initial start/idle position? Seems like you are relying on that spring to move it back to "start" - true?

The two speed set-ups have to rely on a lot of converter slippage (just like clutch slippage on a manual trans in a second gear start) to get started out in low range. The slippage (built into the converter you have) was intended to start a heavy sedan no doubt - not a lightweight roadster. It may have everything to do with the way the thing seems to "slip".

Steve, we do have a return spring at both ends. At the middle of two carbs and at the kick down lever. So it returns well. Weather here is rainy at the moment and I have not done the adjustments to the bands yet. Hope it will clear out for the weekend Smile.

hi guys

 the only way to adjust the auto without the rod is to do it by pressure method theres a bolt on the side of the case near the throttle gearshift levers or on the back of the main body just above the pan you need a pressure gauge & an adapter to screw into the tranny will probably have to make that bit hose long enough to read the gauge from the drivers seat put it in drive the pressure has to be 85psi @ stall speed.
