Anyone know what the 55 and 56 cars with a automatic trans had for ratios,I presently have a maverick 8 inch in my 55 that has 2.79 gears and is way too tall and new parts are going to get expensive to get to a 3.25 ratio. I have been looking at the swapmeets for 3.25 8 inch stuff but have not found any and considering going back with a original rear end if the ratio is close to 3.25,I think I can get one way cheaper then the 500 or so I will have in new gears plus the original rear end had larger brakes then the maverick.

If you have an owners manual or a shop manual either one might tell you. For 56, the rears weer as follows for a car with a 272/292 - per the shop manual
Std 3.78
O/d 3.89
Auto 3.22 (3.54 in Wagons and Police - the wagons had a Dana, police??)

I forgot I had a shop manual and it looks like two ratios were available for automatics,3.30 and 3.56 and does not specify sedan or wagon but the 3.30 is most likely a sedan. I think I am going to try to find a 56 3.22 rear end.

I can not go back to original or my wheels will be hard to take off due to the original axle being a little longer then the maverick 8 inch I have in it so I have another plan,I was looking to put new gears in but the 8 inch gears are more expensive then 9 inch parts. I was talking to someone who sells rebuilt 8 and 9 inch center sections on ebay and he can sell me a 9 inch housing shortened to the maverick size where I can use the maverick axles and brakes plus the spring perches will be where I need them so thats the way to go instead of messing with the original parts, for now I will be using the gears out of the 8 inch thats in my 37 in my 55 since the 37 needs more gear then a 2.79 and will be getting a 3.55 center section for it. The 8 inch in the 55 howls and I know the one in the 37 is quite so it will be going in the 55 untill I put in the 292 then I will change it over to a 9 inch while its all apart.
