I looked this carb up and found it came on a 1956 312 powered police car with automatic.  Could it be used with a manual trans?

Yes

Thanks.  Do you know if the distibutor that was used was a standard Loadomatic, or one with the double diaphragm, or some other/additional variation?

A '56 would have had the dual diaphragm, all vacuum, loadomatic distributor.

Thanks again.  Now I need to find one of those dual diaphragms.  A friend locally may have one of the sun dist. sheets with specs for setting it up.  It would be fun to get an idea of what the cops in '56 were driving.

I vaguelly remember reading about modifying the Holley 2100 2 barrell so that it didnt require a Loadomatic.  Could the same type mod be made on the 4000 to make it useable with a centrifugal advance unit, and if so who may be qualified to do the work?

Yes.  The Model 4000 Teapots can be modified to provide the correct ported vacuum signal for the ’57 and later distributors.  To make this happen, the passageway that goes up to the economizer valve is blocked off which does away with the venturi assisted part of the vacuum signal.  Blocking off the passageway within the cavity where the economizer valve resides is one of the simpler ways to accomplish this.

Wow, Great, Thanks!
